I was wondering if anyone has any advice regarding a fault on a Philips 32PW8808 CRT, this is about 8 years old now and I realise a professional repair may be more than the working value.

One day, the IR range just suddenly dropped to less than 1 metre. I've tried a universal remote and an MCE remote, both have the same range of less than 1 metre, so I think it's the IR receiver in the TV.

The TV seems to have 4 sensors, 2 on either side of the green/yellow indcator LED, but only the left 2 sensors have any effect, and only work if the remote is closer than 1 metre.

I've been into the SAM mode and reset the factory defaults, no change.

Does anyone have any advice on repairs? Thanks.

This sounds like battery... Have you used brand new batteries in both remotes?

Yes - new batteries in all 3 remotes. The MCE remote can drive the HTPC from the couch, the universal remote can drive a different TV in the bedroom from the other end of the bed, but using either of these or the genuine Philips remote, I have to walk up to within 1 metre. It wasn't a fault that gradually developed, it was sudden.

And is the "eye" clean? No greasy marks on both remote and TV? No new lights in the lounge? Perhaps replaced old lights with energy efficient recently? Nothing near the TV that could make the IR signals "bounce"?

Just cleaned all the senders and receivers with isopropyl - no change (but at least the remotes are a little cleaner!). No lights on, no sunlight. Covered all the other IR senders and receivers to ensure nothing is flooding the scene.

Right. In this case I summon someone with actual IR knowledge then...
