First thing would be to check whether she is actually allowed to import them into Italy. You'd be facing a fairly hefty fine if you were caught trying to import any type of seeds in NZ with our biosecurity rules.

I'm pretty sure you don't get seeds anyway - the seed is the vegetable itself - meaning you'd have to carry veges out of the country and into Italy - which probably won't happen.

Get your friend to see if they can find kumara in Italy from any speciality shop - you only need a couple. Leave them in the sun and theyll sprout (like the potatos you forgot about in the cupboard) and plant them in deep soil.
My old man uses a stack of old car tyres with stakes(to hold together) around the outside, and filled with soil.
