"The opaque visor of one of Britain's most famous helmets has been lifted. The identity of The Stig, the always-anonymous test driver on the popular television show Top Gear, has long been a closely guarded secret. On Wednesday, lawyers said the BBC had been refused an injunction blocking publication of a book revealing the identity of the character"

Cant have fun with anything anymore without someone wanting to spoil it ;)
Or is this some big publicity stunt by Top Gear.... ;)

Everybody's known it was Ben Collins for years, it's all over the web

So why don't the BBC upgrade to a new improved "Carbon Fibre Stig" and just dump Ben Collins?

I am a little confused over this. I remember in one episode a year back they lifted the helmet on the Stig and it was Michael Schumacher? Obviously they weren't serious about it - I did watch that episode on the plane so might not have been concentrating.

Nope, that was a p*ss take in response to all the rumours, Damon Hill was always mentioned too. Think Schumi only came on to show off a new Ferrari so it was kind of a promotion for them too

Correct in what langers1972 said about Schumi. They wouldn't let anyone else but Schumi drive the car, so I suppose it was another way for the Beeb to extend the myth of who the Stig was.

As for the earlier comment about it being all over the web, it's there if you look for it. Unless you're a Top Gear fan and are interested in finding out who the Stig was, it's probably not the sort of thing you're going to be looking for.

I'm guessing it's just the BBC trying to get the jump on things, probably because if Ben had launched his book and the Beeb ignored it it would be a lost oportunity for them (both).
It won't do the book launch any harm either so maybe there's a bit of that in there as well.

Maybe they can bump him off during a revenge deathrace against Rubens Barrichello.

Yeah, this should be labelled Ben Collins was the Stig, he's apparently been fired, think he was outed in 2007 after the accident report of Hammond was made public(think it said Advisor/Backup driver: Ben Collins)

I thought The Stig was Michael Schumacher. I'm sure I heard that on Top Gear sometime ago. Ah well, it's not who I thought it was.
