Orange UK is moving to landline business, following "Ofcom's Wholesale Line Rental programme, under which BT is obliged to allow operators to offer both line rental and calls to customers over its network".

It looks like they are going to offer call charges 20% lower than BT, and discounted rates for calls between Orange landlines and Orange mobile number ranges.

Interesting move... I wonder if Vodafone will follow suit, first in Europe, then here?

I thought Vodafone are already trialling it out.. something in terms of if you are at home you use your mobile number as a lndline and roam with it if you are away from home?
Is it public information yet?

Vodafone Germany offers thie service you described. Vodafone New Zealand is planning it, probably testing with the same infrastructure Vodafone Germany is using.

The only roadblock seems to be (discussed here before) a document Vodafone New Zealand sent to the ComCom about termination charges - what is to be considered local number, landline, etc. Until this is clear the service will probably not launch.

But in Orange's case it's actually reselling landline from BT, not only offering a local number associated to a mobile phone...

Seems a bit backwards doesn't it? So many mobile operators talk about the death of the land-line. Goes to show that there is life in that old copper yet.

I am sure an Indian company (prob Reliance) has the same thing. You can test their landline numbers (sms) and these numbers can roam. Under 1-2KM its a local call ( free) and after that its a mobile call..... Telco has grown in there....
