Hello,

I'm trying to find some information about the new motorway link to the airport but cannot find any relevant information.
Is there a better way to go to the airport rather than taking the Gillies Ave / Market Rd exit and then take the South Western Motorway?
What about going back to the city?

Thanks.

Well I assume your coming from the city so going south. So take the southern motorway till you get to the Takanini exit. At the offramp take a right turn and keep going up Great South Road until you get to a massive intersection at Manurewa, and go left onto Weymouth Road. Keep going down Weymouth Road until you get to a HUGE round about just before Clendon Center, and take the 4th exit so your on Rosscomon Road. Keep following that and it eventually turns into the start of a motorway so and there should be a sign that says left for Airport. But why not take the new motorway anyway? It's the easiest way.

That was my question (not clearly stated anyway): What / where is the new motorway? :)

Thanks

Takanini ? Thats way south.

From Auckland city on the southern, stay on the motorway until you get to the Onehunga turnoff - take that, go through Onehunga, onto the SW there, and follow to the airport.

Avoid at rush hour though, fairly smooth trip until you hit Onehunga. Off peak its a smooth run.

The new extn from SH20 to SH1 at Manukau dosent affect Airport traffic coming from Auckland city, only those coming from South.

Thanks. I heard on the news that the time to go to the airport from the city and vice versa will decrease due to the new extension and I assumed it somehow connects the southern with the south-western.

So, the old "known" route will continue to be the best for the moment.

Thanks all.

It possibly does connect at Manukau somewhere (havent been along the whole length of the new bit) but Ive always found going through Onehunga faster for me heading to Mangere.

Definitely.  I can't imagine people actually drive all the way to the South Eastern exit only to drive all the way back to the SW motorway.  Is that the way you go, xpd?  Admittedly you're driving on residential streets but it's nearly 10km shorter going down Manuakau/Pah Road and the traffic volume is less variable.

It connects right at manukau. When you get to the manukau off ramp, take that and go straight through to the southern on ramp and the onramp to the motorway that goes to the airport is on the right. You have to be quick. Same for the northbound offramp at manukau

The Manukau motorway going from Manukau to the airport is not quite complete yet. There is a bridge that has to be built to connect the Manukau to airport motorway to Puhinui Road.

Traffic that takes the motorway from Manukau to the airport is being routed through airport oaks so it is long drive in a big loop.

The new connection from Southern Motorway to Puhinui Road is due to be finished by Christmas.

Until then it is probably not worth coming South from the city and taking the Manukau exit.

Cheers, Matt.

Um... have any of you heard of a GPS unit? you know... navman or Tom Tom...

Or Google Maps? - you tell it where you are and where you want to go and then it shows you the shortest way to get there and maybe a few alternatives... It even has directions for if you want to walk or take a bus or train!

very clever!

Neither google maps or GPS's will generally work at the moment as the motorway has just opened and unless you have http://nzopengps.org/ the maps won't be updated yet.

Google maps has not been updated yet.

I wouldn't hold your breath for google maps to show the new manukau motorway extension. Took them nearly a year to update the last extension of the Southwestern Motorway from Hillsborough Rd..

Took the Airport Express Bus from the City yesterday.... it goes down Mt Eden road and onto the Nth Western to Airport.

The route was faster than I expected (I'm used to getting off at Gillies and then down Manukau Rd), but getting on to Mt Eden Rd from the city is easier than getting onto it from the M-Way
