Hi All

The Nissan Skyline 2001/2002 is at the top of my preferred car purchase list for the budget that I have.

I am wanting to know if anyone has this car or has owned one in the past and what their thoughts are on it?

What have you had go wrong and also what do you like about the car?

I really like the shape and style and hopefully being a Japanese car the maintenance will be less than getting anything European.

Cheers.

if you can, try and buy one that has some kind of record of whats been done to it, because everyone i have seen has been driven like its the drivers last days on earth and be prepared for the police to take an active interest in you. they do have a reputation.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Never thought of the police angle.

Most seem to be Jap imports so its hard to know if they have had a previous life as Fast and Furious Tokiyo drift cars or not. Its the new shape Skyline however which I think is less of a boy racer car so it may be less of a target.

Don't worry about the police issue, if it's a V35 you won't get pulled over much if at all :)

The V35s have mostly had pretty easy lives since the Japanese don't regard them as being a Skyline since they aren't straight 6...so in that respect that are a very good investment!

I've owned most of the older model Skylines in the past and they have all been good and pretty much bulletproof cars. The V6 in the later Skylines isn't as bulletproof as the straight 6, but is still a very good engine. If you wanted a cheaper but similar power package(less the RWD) then the Maximas have similar engines but slightly less power. As the Skylines have the Neo system which is Nissans version of Vtec or VVTC

What model are you looking at? The 350GT?

I am looking at a 300GT tonight. A little more power than the 250 and also has the 5 speed auto but not as expensive as the 350GTs.

I am looking forward to what they drive like. I am use to a manual so it will be a bit of a change going to an auto, but its time for a family car now and this seems to give a bit of both worlds with a bit of a sporty look.

Nissan Skyline's are also the third most stolen car nationally according to the AA (2010) so be prepared for a higher premium Laughing

My flatmate has one of those, he has never had any issues with it.

My mum, on the otherhand has a R34 GTR Skyline, which looks like this:

Out of the 2, I would much rather go with the GTR, the looks you get while driving it is worth it. The looks my 46yr old mother gets is also priceless. If you buy one that is all stock you know that there is a less chance it's been trashed. You would not want to buy one of these off the likes of Trademe, have a good hunt around for one, you will fall in love with it.

I find the Skylines Classic Look is what get's all the attention, the newer Skylines with the new body don't have the same look, and look like any other car.

I still prefer the R32s, but the R34 GTRs are my second favourite :)

Your mums car is awesome!!

I think the V35 really killed the Skyline series tbh, that's why the new R35 is just known as a GTR with no reference to Skyline at all.

I think for a V35 the insurance premiums will be a lot less than the R32,R33 and R34s, which is a good thing. What about a 3.5L 2004/2005 Maxima? They have similar front looks, just a different rear. But are still very nice cars to drive and about the same price as a 300GT

I am srsly jealous of my mother >.< - But the insurance on the Skylines are through the roof. I can't be added to the insurance policy of my mums skyline due to the amount of power it has, and for how much the car is worth. I have never had a accident, have my full license, but the only thing really stopping me is that I am only 21.

Yeah that's true, my insurance went from 2500 a year down to 1200 a year when I turned 25.  But by that time, I sold all 3 and bought a house .  Which has turned out to be just as expensive as my cars, in terms of always needing maintenance and modifications!!

Wow, nice car your Mum has!!

I actually quite like the V35, especially with tinted windows it looks great. Plus with the sedan I can convince my wife that it is an easy car to put the baby seat in when it comes along :)

There seem to be a few going at Turners auctions at the moment for a lot better estimated selling price than anything on Trademe. Having just been through dealing with insurance as my car was written off working out Market Value is not an easy thing!!

Havent really looked at the Maxima, might be worth considering as well.

New maximas are front wheel drive, whereas the skyline will be RWD or 4WD if that makes a difference to you.
I think RWD cars are easier to work on then FWD or 4WD/AWD so perhaps consider that if you will work on it yourself.

Other then that, if your open to other suggestions, get a turbo subaru =p, fairly fast and still practical.
I dont drive a Subaru(anymore, my brother crashed it) so now i daily drive my turbo rotary rx7.
I feel Subaru's are pretty hard to beat for the money. (in terms of both power and practicality)

sorry for going off topic, I know its not what your looking at but its something to think about :)

just test drived this one off TradeMe http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=349579622. Good price and quite tidy.

Didnt realise how BIG they where. Its a bit of a change going from my 2litre nippy alfa 147 manual to this 300GT Auto. Something I would get use to I guess.

Thanks for the suggestion of the Subaru, never really been a big fan of them.

I love the Suby Outbacks (2002ish onwards) - nice big family cars and still fun to drive.
However, i have a Nissan (Cefiro, about 11 years old), V6 - best car in terms of maintenance I have ever owned - I could recommend Nissan V6 engines to anyone based on my experience with this one!

Out of curiosity, what makes a sedan easier to get a baby seat into compared with a hatchback or wagon? I have always been baffled as to why people buy sedans as they appear to be much less flexible and offer no real advantage but since so many people buy them I can't help wondering if I'm missing something.

The Sedan as opposed to a two door Skyline or the two door hatchback that I had previously. Wagon or 4 door hatch are just as good :)

The key thing is easy access :)
