Whilst well meaning, baking "treats" to taken on a boat and then driven 400km is probably not the best use of resources.

How about instead of

 "Step 2:
Head to the supermarket or local diary and get some ingredients for your favourite baking treat"

People just take the money they would have spent at the supermarket and give it to the emergency funds currently running

Making something that you can take next door is one thing, but shipping it nearly 500km is another matter.

As an aside Toi Poneke have asked for people to stop them bringing them stuff for Christchurch and to give cash instead

Yep,    cash, not stuff, is what is needed (especially not perishable stuff)

Why not have the bakeoff, sell the cakes to raise money, and send the money?

Every little bit helps . . .

I'm not affiliated in any way but my feeling is anything that people want to do to help should be supported.

This seems like nice novel kiwi ingenuity. $20 worth of ingredients might be a moment of satisfaction for 5 or 10 people. I say good on the organisers.

Doesn't seem like a good idea to me, either. I wouldn't want to eat "home baking" supplied my anonymous strangers. Just seems weird.

The part about canned food/toys makes a lot of sense, but baking?  Hmmm...
