On the 25th anniversary of Microsoft's IPO, Fortune is featuring our 1986 cover story in which we followed around a young Bill Gates as he prepared to take his company public. Here's the story of the birth of a billionaire.

Editor's Note: This story was first published in the  July 21, 1986 issue of Fortune. As Bro Uttal told Fortune's editor, Marshall Loeb, at the time (see Editor's Letter at the bottom of this page), "I doubt that a story like this has been published before or is likely to be done again

He worked very hard and it paid off. Larry Ellison was very jealous of this deal after Microsoft went public because Bill Gates was much more richer than him just a day after Larry went public with Oracle which only fetched him $85 million I think.

Now Bill Gates is putting all that money to good use in the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Interesting, isn't it? The richest man in the world is giving away his fortune through a foundation that saves lives (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), and convinced others to do the same (Warrent Buffet gives away his fortune, Facebook's Zuckerberg to give away half of his fortune), with nothing but the betterment of human lives in mind... But what people talk about? How "evil" Gates is (mind you he doesn't even work at Microsoft anymore, but people can't get past that).

Ive always liked BG he has that nerdy look about him that makes me go awwww. I would love to meet the guy and shake his hand, I think hes a great person and yes what he and his wife are doing is amazing that is old news hes be doing the generosity thing for years.

Its not Bill Gates its more his corporation his empire its kinda like the roman empire of the technology world. I find those who hate microsoft and ive been there from time to time is because they are just far to successful for us screamers to take it all in without becoming jealous. lol

Does Steve Jobs give anything to charity?

I guess he can just leave some money to worthy causes in his will. Can't be long now!
