Found 2 jobs on trade me today that said NZ citizenship required for job.

Now i know by law you must be NZ resident or have a work permit but i see no reason why you would need to be a citizen unless their were specific parts of the job that required it (e.g. travelling for long periods of time).

Why would a business put this on one of their listings?

That is a bit harsh, but then again maybe they are jobs that require someone to have broad knowledge of New Zealand and it's history perhaps?

Kinda like the USA where you answer a lot of questions related to the country before getting your green card.

But assuming that someone who doesn't have citizenship doesn't have broad knowledge of New Zealand and it's history is also unfair and very possibly untrue.

Surely that's the sort of thing you would figure out in their CV or in an interview?

If you can tell us what the jobs are we maybe could shed some more light. For example government jobs, or companies that have government contracts that could have security implications can have quite strict employment criteria.

It's a common requirement for lots of jobs in other countries including our dear old AU.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

There are a lot of people in companies (Who do the hiring) that are just lazy and don't want to spend time sifting through the people, going through an interview and then turning them down.

So it seems they are just cutting most of it from the start and looking for a very specific profile. However yes, It is still quite unfair.

Coming from South Africa myself, Took me 2 years before I was allowed to work or study here.

They probably got the wording mixed up. I can't imagine anything other than working for a government department requiring being a citizen, and then they're so obsessed by equal rights for all regardless of ability etc they'd probably write even that off.

Jobs in the intelligence government sector require citizenship. Everything else should be ok with residency only.

Military jobs usually require NZ citizenship. They do make allowances for other common wealth citizens like UK etc. Ive seen jobs in my field at Devenport and the require a NZ citizenship (even though they are technically civiallian positions).

I believe to be on a local council you have to be a NZ citizen, which I don't think is very good. That also may apply to being in parliament. I don' t think there are any laws regarding the matter.

I think it's most likely that they just wanted to deter overseas applicants with no visa (which you get a lot of when advertising on seek), and the person who wrote the job spec is clueless over the differences between work visas/residency/citizenship.  As others said, only some special govt jobs require that..
