Well after ordering on Monday and NZPost not delivering on a promised service. I finally got my new toy. Now I just have to wait untill I can go home and play with it, I suspect I have a very late night ahead of me.

  • 20” iMac Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz
  • 1GB PC5300 DDR2 667Mhz RAM
  • 250GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA HDD
  • ATI Radeon X1600 128 MB.

If you can’t tell I’m really excited right now.

Particularly those on IRC.

Nice Imac, no doubt you'll have loads of fun with it and won't want to downgrade back to your PC.

LOL. Those IRC types are a dodgy lot.
He might end up wanting to upgrade to a PC!

Pity it doesnt come with Windows Mobile 5

bradstewart: if you've ever owned a harrier or apache you'll know how often they crash and if you look at how windows mobile manages memory it makes DOS look good.
aloha: VERY nice! the SDK for these is free, there heaps of applications and Linux is very maturely suited to MMU-less devices.

There's a reason for that. For example on Palm OS there wasn't multitasking. Multitasking was available for OS threads, but not for applications. It means that when you tap the Home menu  or use one of the soft buttons the current application is closed, and the other one is open. Developers had to create strategies to cope with an OS that basically didn't support state.

On Windows Mobile we are talking about a real multi-tasking OS and applications remain open - the (X) button is actually "Minimise", not close. There is no need to save state, etc. And moving from application to application is almost instantaneous. Hence more memory use.

The OS however can and will close applications on an as needed basis. People just don't know about it.

Now, the files pointed on that topic you linked too are probably growing because of more intense use of resources, or dynamic linking to libraries.

Now, comparing a multi-tasking OS with DOS, really why people go to this point? They are completely different and in different generations.

It seems that with the ability to run windows, mac may have come of age in some ways. main reason - you can run any software i.e. not just mac stuff.  this has always been the big issue for me with mac. being a pirate and downloading all my software etc its alot easier to find PC software for anything and everything then it is to find a mac version ( altougth this does seem to be leveling out).

This has always been my reason for putting non IT friends off the sexier looking mac - where will you get office etc from and how many peeps do you know who can help you if you need it ( you know that support we all do for friends and family).

But I must admit that lately I am starting to change my view of mac - funny what an intel processor can do huh.

Classic. There are a few more Mac ads than you have listed, you can find them here.

Well after staying up till 3am on my new toy, I can official say I am appalled at myself for taking so long to make switch.

The setup was very easy, I plugged me keyboard into one of the USB ports on the back, plugged my mouse into the keyboard then plugged the power cord in. Pressed the power button, entered my name etc, it then asked for the password for my wi-fi network, then BAM! It’s on, internet works and it detects my windows network, no configuration required.

Then I decided to play with Bluetooth for a bit, so I turn Bluetooth on, add device, it finds my phone, i enter a pass code and again BAM! It’s working. Ok so now i wanted to send a photo I took using the built in iSight camera to my phone, now cones the question, how do I do this in OS X? I clicked the? In the Bluetooth devices panel and wow look at that it's a suggested question.

That’s probably enough for now; I think I might Blog my experience in more detail soon.

Almost forgot to mention.. 25sec from off to fully on and ready to go. 3sec to power off.
