Need more information.
How often does it connect to the internet?
How much data is it using?

or are you trying to stop him from intentionally using the internet?

If it is unknown usage my guess would be Email polling.

Not sure how often by it keeps showing the icon of the planet earth without me going in to a web application.

it's not using a lot of data i just find it wired that the phone keeps accessing the internet with out needing to.

If no resolution from checking settings and programs then I would install Sony Ericsson Update Service and reflash your phone with the latest software.
