Why are you so depressed about our national debt. Aren't you glad you don't live in the US.
Count yourself lucky that you have a roof over your head and food to eat.

I didn't realize it was so bad, we are even worse than the PIGS countries. That counter is scary. Moving to Oz would help, as there's is small.

I'm not sure about the actual figures, but most of the time when this comes up they combine personal debt with government debt and then go 'look how bad it is!'. If you take the personal debt component away the government debt compared to other countries is pitiful. Misleading much?

NZ doesn't have a serious debt problem. But it is a lot worse now, at just under 30% of GDP than it was  (only 18% of GDP) when National took office.

Greece, on the other hand is 160% of the GDP and tax cheating is so bad they collect less that half what they are owed. THEY have a big problem.

The best thing you do for NZ's debt would be to not vote for the National Party. They want this deficit so they can justify privatising our assets and giving them - and all future profits - to their cronies and multi-national corporate backers. They have done nothing to contain the debt. Instead, they cut taxes to make sure we would have the biggest possible debt in the shortest possible time. The Chch earthquakes were just a "bonus".

I don't vote for Labour, but at least they were a prudent government and they paid down the debt by a large amount up to 2008 when the corporate-media driven "Tax Kutz!" campaign made people go silly. Well, we got the tax cuts and there are no more jobs than there were before - in fact, less - and the deficit is growing even faster.

Michael Cullen warned of a "rainy day". National - as usual, in my experience of over 30 years - didn't listen. We're paying the price for that now. But then most voters don't listen, either, or they wouldn't have been silly enough to vote for National.

If you REALLY want to do something about the debt don't vote for the vandals who are currently in power, piling up the debt as fast they possibly can get away with so they can pull the wings off social services and sell our stuff to their mates.

As for this web site....what "debt" are they talking about? Public debt? Private debt? Both?

Who knows? They don't say.

It's not that bad. This web site is crap. Butat the same time, it is - relatively - worse now than it was in 2008.

Yes but whether it is public or private debt, it is still debt that each person in the country owes, it doesn't really matter which category iot comes under. All the debt could be shift to private, if the country was totally user pays. Likewise all the debt could be pubic debt if the government paid for everything. It is simply putting the debt under headings, but the government is owned by the people, so it is their debt too.

At the end of the day, the country is spending more than it it earning, which is unsustainable, and the party will need to come to an end eventually

NZ has just had it's credit rating downgraded, where they look at total debt INCLUDING PRIVATE so things are not good, and this current government has done very little to fix this. So we do need to look at TOTAL debt, and not be blinded by just the public debt figures.

I could not have said it better myself! Well said!

It is a marvel of our times that people still vote National in time aftertime - when they have not had an original idea for the last 30+ years! For National, it's always the same game: blame the poor, fire sale it ALL, and retire to a nice corporate consultancy/director job.

All options are bad it's just National are the least worst option currently.

Consider these two facts:

43% of households in New Zealand receive more from the Government in support than they pay in tax.
17% of households in New Zealand pay a 97% of the net income tax collected by the Government.

I don't know how any sane person could support any party that wants to increase income tax on workers given the above, workers are already paying a massively disproportionate amount.

The government budget is in deficit because they are spending more than they are bringing in. Spending hasn't been increased drastically under national in fact they've been cutting a fair bit, however tax income is down due to the global recession.

To balance the budget they need to increase tax on capital or tax on consumer spending or reduce government spending.

We will see after the RWC what major policies the parties will be campaigning on but you can predict something like this:

Labour: Capital gains tax, increase income tax for highest bracket, increase spending
National: No tax changes, reduce spending

Labour was in power for 3 consecutive terms aka 9 years before the current National government term.

So people haven't been voting them in very often in recently times!

Personally I haven't decided who I will vote for this time around, waiting to see what policies are announced first but right now as mentioned in my earlier post it's probably going to be a matter of choosing the least bad option.

That's the trouble with the whole "Time for Change" mantra that an opposing party inevitably spews out.
People don't realise that they are just jumping from the frying pan to the fire most of the time.
