Ive got some many cd's under my house now which have been bought, ripped and put back in the case its not funny.

So when it comes to buying music online to download is my only option itunes ?

Ive bought previous Radiohead albums from their site, but Im after some older Faithless albums this time and thought it would be easier to purchase them only and I can save the cd.

Nothing happened doesn't mean it's legal.

Those are not legal download sites. Those are Russian sites that use a loophole in their legislation. Many times people will supply credit card information to those sites and see them being used somewhere else, or the card processors will simply stop accepting payments for them.

Legal sites in New Zealand are Vodafone Play, DigiRAMA for example.

+1  - those Russian sites are not legal. There was something in the media about 6 months ago telling people that if you continue to use them, then expect to get burnt sooner of later... I'd feel real safe if the Russian Mafia had my CC number!  LOL

DigiRAMA is great.  CokeTunes was great for the 2 years it existed...

bandit.fm is Sony's online service.

I got quite a bit of stuff from them for a while as they were running good promos through bluebird chips (codes in the packet which were often doubled in value when claimed).

I now pretty much use iTunes though.

For local music

Flying Nun

Amplifier

SmokeCDs

There's also Digirama, but I've never used them myself.

I try to buy all my International music directly from the band's own webshop if I can, otherwise CDwow has some pretty sharp prices occasionally which can't be beat.

Last month, while I was waiting for a friend to do her shopping I checked out the local Warehouse clearance bin and struck it lucky: older Faithless CDs ($3-$5) and a 2008 Greatest Hits DVD ($3.50). You might be able to do the same, just not at the Lower Hutt store.Smile

Buying CDs used to give me better sound quality than the downloads I bought. Nowdays with higher bitrates in the downloads I haven't noticed so much but I still prefer to get the CD/DVD unless I only want a few songs off the album.

What about Amazon MP3, seen the app on my phone, cant say i have brought any songs of it, but if i were to buy a song would probably use that, I assume Amazon is safer for credit card details.

On another note in same topic, what is the quality of an itunes or even a downloaded amazon MP3? I did pay for a song a while back from some online thingy and it was crap quality, about 128kbps dont even think it was as good as a MP3 format either

I don't know whether this is still the case, but a few weeks ago Burger King was selling $40 iTunes vouchers for $30.

Thanks for the suggestions, but Im still shocked by some of the prices. VodafonePlay only selling by the single at $2.39 each !

Digirama has the odd special at $10 which is more like it

Try bandit.fm it surprises me what they have sometimes, then again it surprises me what they don't have as well. I just checked and they have most Faithless singles at $1.79 and whole albums at various prices. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the songs separately then the whole album I've found in my experiences, normally when there is a low number of tracks on the album.

Prices went up by a huge amount when iTunes entered the market.  It doesn't get any cheaper I'm afraid (I still remember when all tracks were $1.29 from Digirama).

To answer the quality question, all downloads are either lossless or 192kbps.

Some good news. 7Digital is expanding further into NZ, Australia and 34 other countries at the beginning of the next year and they will also bring smartphone apps for Windows Phone, iPhone and Android devices.

http://thenextweb.com/apps/2011/12/07/7digital-outlines-plans-for-2012-windows-phone-app-and-us-expansion-on-the-horizon/%20

They already have a store in NZ but I think the selection is not that great. Their UK store has over 17 million songs.

The Vodafone music store is showing promise - you can download from android phones now directly from the m.vodafone.co.nz web portal - they've got/had some free kiwi songs there for download.

Hopefully we'll see them up the bitrate soon - 128kbps MP3 is not great
