I still say they need to come up with better terminology than "zero dollars", it doesn't make grammatical, or logical sense.

Telcos are careful not to say these smartphones are free with the contract, Brislen said.

Telecom's site says "Free" next to the appropriate phones when you select a plan.

Monthly price is the same on smartphone $100 with or without getting a phone, so IMO that makes the phone free.

I agree, what he should be saying is those that pay month to month are really the ones subsidising the handsets for everyone else!
