Last week I sent a package to a client in South Africa via FedEx.

You might look at a map and think that the likely route for that would be

NZ-Australia-South Africa.

But no! FedEx like a more roundabout route.

NZ-Australia-China-Khazakstan-France-UK-South Africa

How many needless miles has that package travelled?!

FedEx probably don't operate flights directly from Australia to South Africa so it just transits via their hubs to get there.

I'm sure that is so.

It just seems a crazy mileage for the route - must kill their environmental statistics in the Annual Report!

That said, if people send me things by FedEx, once it hits Auckland it goes via at least 3 different couriers just to travel to Martinborough.

UPS aren't too bad when I order from San Jose.

Usually goes Oakland -> Kentucky -> Hawaii -> Sydney -> Auckland

I had a UPS package from Canada that literally did a loop; I think maybe the customs form wasn't done correctly because I can't think of any other reason for it to hit the same three depots twice in a row...

at least the package gets there. courier dropped a package off just before christmas, the owners son was doing the delivery route. boy left the boot of the car up as he backed out the drive, just as he was about to pull out of the drive he realised something. when he opened the boot a package had fallen onto the gravel drive, which then got caught under the back wheel and was dragged about 50 metres down the drive.

Don't know if it is different in the city but I rarely get asked to sign for anything here in the countryside.

Came home once to find the Mac Pro workstation I had ordered at a cost of almost $5000 just sat outside the front door!!
