Hi,

I have 24 hours in Hong Kong next month and wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of decent tech / gadget shopping? I'm keen to find cluster of shops so I can spend a few hours in one go and make best use of my time.

I was in Hong Kong last week and what impressed me the most was Kowloon a whole area off Nathan Road,

There are a couple of places I would recommend but the best would have to be the Times Square shopping centre on Hong Kong Island, Causeway Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Square_%28Hong_Kong%29).

Take the MTR and get off at .... the Causeway Bay station :)

They split the levels of shops by what they sell, electronics, clothing etc so there are a lot of places. I picked up my first gen ipad there.

They also have restaurants on the levels above the centre, accessible via lift outside. So you can have a nice meal all in the same location (try Tony Roma's if you like ribs!) and then wander down and take the Star Ferry back across to Kowloon.

Street level retailers of tech, the ones with shrink wrapped gadgets in the windows up and down Nathan Road on Kowloon side of the harbour, do tend to be dodgier but you can also get those dime a dozen android tablets from them. They are pretty full on retailers and will pull you in off the street and harass you so watch out !

This is coming from a guy who has been there many times and have family who lived there.

If you want to look at build your own PC components including screens, keyboards, etc and also laptops, printers, etc then the Golden Shopping Centre in Sham Shui Po was the biggest/best market style mall I found. Quite an experience, highly recommended.

I should be staying on Hong Kong Island, so Causeway is the likely 1st stop. Might have to stop in Kowloon on the way back to the airport in the morning... Thanks for the suggestions

1+ golden shopping arcade. I was there a couple of weeks ago. Very good prices. Best discounts are on ssds (50 to 66% nz price) cables,adapters and sd cards and the like. Take a list and if you see anything you like write the name of the shop down( if you dont instantly buy) its a bit of a maze. Doesnt open properly untill after 12pm but some stuff opens around 10.

Would anyone have any idea what time shops close at the Golden centre? I was in Bangkok last year and things shut in a similar centre around 8pm and I´m keen to fit a trip in one way or another in my stopover

Hmmm sounds like it could be shopping under the influence of jet lag - unless lovely Lufthansa want to upgrade me on the flight from Munich?

The Golden Shopping Centre is pretty cool if you want computer parts, systems, phones, gaming devices etc.

But if you want to see the whole consumer electronic experience, head out to Mong Kok and exit the MTR at either exit D1 or D2. There you will a whole street full of electronic stores including the main ones like Fortress, Broadway and a host of smaller ones.

I suspect this was what John was alluding to.

When I lived there SSP and this area were my main haunts :-)
