I have seen a few queries on this.

I have a gas problem which i need to trench today, and i figured i should run some conduit in the same trench to push fibre through. It's 30 mtrs in length and bends around 45 degrees approx at one point in the run.

The chorus site is not clear, and proper conduit seems expensive - can any one outline my options? Can i run some plumbing pipe/downpipes or something and chorus would be ok with that?

Just completed a similar exercise in AKL and had to follow the garden beds to maintain WAF level.

I spoke to chorus engine when they scoped my fibre and indicated 20mm is the normal and if I wanted the chorus green, then source from electrical wholesaler. They also said you could use electrical conduit from the likes of bunnings which I ended up doing - the orange stuff. I also put a draw wire down for them too which worked a treat. https://www.bunnings.co.nz/wrap-move-50m-blue-strapping-tape_p02610086

They had no issue connecting this to their handhold and in fact used the grey version of what I laid.

I would look to allow for a slightly larger diameter if you can and in discussion with them they do the same depending on the site...50mm would make life real easy and plenty of future capacity.

You'll be lucky if you get Chorus onsite today to take up their free offer (i'd imagine they would need a few days notice)

Just grab 20mm conduit from bunnings or similar, as above. Use sweep bends. And run some sort of drawcord through before burying. One way to get the drawcord into the pipe is by taping it to a tent pole (fibreglass/aluminium type pole for dome style tent)

If it goes pear shaped you can tie a small bag onto a price of string and vacume it through as a last resort. I install fiber in chch and works a treat as long as u watch the vacuum temperature and seal the vacuum to the conduit well enough

Thanks ChorusNZ, yes it is very useful (I knew Enable offered this free service, but didn't know Chorus did). Just wanted to make sure the OP wasn't waiting around at 5pm today to close in the trench expecting Chorus to turn up same day for a free service - given their time constraint

@chorus just a query on the above diagram.

Shows minimum cover 450mm.

I had chorus on site to install UFB for a client and they were hand digging 150 -200mm deep, I showed them that picture and they said it was outdated ( that was May or June ) last year. They said inside boundary was now 200 ( I think ).

I did put a stop to that trenching and install for this an another reason. It has now been done to standard.

Can you please confirm the 450mm depth is still correct.

Got any hose (should be just under 20mm)? just push that through to then use it to pull your draw string/cable.

The installers were not using conduit, they were burying a black tube approx 10mm in diameter, there are a couple of tubes inside of that.

Very easy for a spade to go through in the garden.

thats a microduct, and i believe 100-200mm is fine for it. its should be buried deeper where you are likely to put a spade through it.

Thanks all - i rang Chorus and there is a form and turn around time of 5 days for the free conduit.

The plumber has put in a temporary connection, so i now have some more time so just getting the form now. Should be ok as he will lay the pipe mid next week so i am hoping i can keep the trench open until then.

Hi John, that sounds like method known as a shallow bury, using a ruggedized Fibre cable. 200mm is the correct depth for this and the cable will look like this (sorry old pic)

It's one of the standard install methods Chorus use to install Fibre.
