On Cheapies I saw a post about Zeronet and never heard of them before. I found some posts here of people who signed up, but not a lot.

The green part appeals to us. I know it's a bit of a gimmick as it only applies to their offices, but they do plant some trees and it's always better than doing nothing.

Currently on a $95 plan with Skinny, with Zeronet I could save $270 per year as they have a 50% off deal for 6 months.

As I WFH often, a solid internet connection is a must. I am very happy with Skinny and their excellent support, so a bit wary to swap. I tried swapping to 2degrees but after being on hold with them for 60 minutes for a simple question, decided to cancel the swap.

Based in the Wellington region if that matters.

But their claims on Hyperfibre are fully false:

They use Compass behind the scenes I believe and it is also owned by the same directors of Compass so the ties are there (despite being 2 separate companies).

Yeah I saw that discussion about ping. I'm not an expert on that topic though, but I'm fine with my current ping/latency. Just looking for a better deal :) Just cautious of switching as Skinny has been very good.

Yeah you'll be fine switching. All ISP's are pretty good in NZ these days.

Their online chat doubled down on those claims... They confirmed hyperfibre latency is much better than standard fibre and I'd notice the difference.

There are arguably some reasons why it might be faster, like fewer HF users on average on a PON port than 'standard' fibre users (Upstream uses a TDMA mechanism to allocate upload slots) - and lower serialisation delays for higher speed interfaces (but I don't know if that holds true for GPON vs XGPON etc)

However, those differences are in the microsecond arena - a couple of orders of magnitude (at least) lower than claimed. What's more, I doubt that the people behind the marketing statement even understand what I mentioned here :-)

Hopefully, we don't have another My Republic. Their claims about being the fastest ISP were simply misleading.

Since MR is now gone, someone had to take up the trophy, and this time Zeronet are claiming pings improve the speed 😂

Think I'll stick with Skinny. While most ISP's should be fine, their support not always is. E.g. with 2Degrees it was very hard to get in touch. With Skinny, I can just ask anything on the web chat and get a response within minutes.

The claims about pings and latency don't add up indeed.

That name brings back memories. Weren't they the same ones that brought us free dialup internet 'Freenet' over 20 years ago? Seem to have been around for a long time.

Ping is not a speed, it is a network diagnosis tool that (amongst other things) can measure the latency between nodes of a network. Lower latency is a good thing and one way of measuring this would be to use Ping; Ping itself is not something that is low.

I wonder if these tests supposedly completed by Chorus that show the latency added for a non-Hyperfibre UFB connection to be 6-50 ms vs 1 ms for Hyperfibre are publicly available to back up this claim.

Zeronet were unable to furnish the tests when I asked. I have good reason to believe no such results exist.

Stick with Skinny. 1, you know what you are getting for your money & 2, you are happy with what you are getting.

When it comes to wfh, having only chat support available is going to be painful. Especially since you know the agent is most likely chatting to 2-5 people simultaneously. Then there is the 10am start time. For me that would be 3hrs of lost productivity before somebody even starts looking at the issue, never mind resolving it.

Again, 1, you know what you are getting for your money. In January, when I looked at their website, I saw no actual proof or even a commitment to make available reports to back up what to me sounds like marketing / green-washing.

Regardless of my comments above, I am a customer of theirs currently.

customer here, their ping seems to spike a lot during 6-8pm for some reason on 900 fibre, and that is using an ethernet connection.

Imagine gaming - it's a nightmare sliding back and forth.

I am now waiting for feedback
