Jama: Don - I am surprised you blame Telecom for the lack of broadband at hotels for your delegates. Blame the hotel. In Wellington there are many options besides Telecom. Citylink can pump fibre to the door, TCL have a presence and so do Woosh.

Let me put it you this way - You failed to deliver internet to 700 delegates.

And no different to any business - why invest in capex if there is no return or compelling reason. This is business not a charity.

I wrote you a nice long response and the server spat the dummy telling me I didn't close some tags...  Grrr.

Not writting it all again other than to say that I think you've misunderstood me a little.

Cheers Don

Usually happens when you have one or {quote} tags without a corresponding {/quote} close tag. Geekzone is a well-formed forum :). When that happens, just use the back button or similar - the text is usually there in the edit field still.

Felix:

Jama, you beat me to it... just! $4.5b to Ameritech and Bell Atlantic... $4.5b... the b is for billion!

ULL is be like telling CCH they have to let anyone who claims to be a competitor grow trees on their land... or telling ANZ Bank they have to let customers from other banks be served by their tellers..

Telecom is not owned by the NZ govt (though it is about to be run by it) it is owned by the share holders...

Perhaps I should stop complaining and move to the slightly more free country of Cuba... at least the weather is better, and I hear the cigars are great... not sure about the broadband speeds though ;-)

How about comparing ULL to the ATM network? Banks realise that if they all duplicated their ATM networks it would

a) Cost a lot of money

b) Result in a duplication of resources with ATM's all sitting next to each other

So the banks effectively offer ULL on their ATM's and let other banks customers use their ATM's in return for a fixed commercially agreed fee. Makes a lot of sence really doesn't it - much like ULL.

To Jama's Defence, would this not be ATM Wholesale =P

  • Everyone is entitled to their opinion (keeping their posts within forum guidelines of course).
  • I think forcing people to declare an association is akin to some things that happened in WWII.
  • Take anything you read on a forum with a grain of salt - its opinions, not gospel.
  • Not everyone in this world agrees on everything else with everyone else. Its called opinion and debate.
I voluntarily declare that I do not work for Telecom, and that I have mixed feelings towards the U of the LL.

Declaration of interest is a tenet of ethical conduct. Opinion and debate is all very well, but those with a vested interest aren't here for an open minded discussion - they just want to influence as many other people as possible. I'm surprised they didn't try harder before the news was leaked as it's all too late now.

Comparing someone to Hitler is the desperate last resort of the terminally argumentatively challenged. Cmon, show us who's the real dictator here Mr Moderator - kick me off and scrub my posts, I know you're dying to...

I thought Tonys posts were relatively balanced and moderate compared to some of the anti or pro unbundling posts. That backlash seems a bit undeserved in my opinion.

Unless I missed something.

There's no dictatorship on a private board - simply because it's private. People are allowed to write because I allow, since this is, in essence, my property.

I am always 100% behind whatever the moderators *I* vested here on Geekzone do or write, when it comes to keeping the boards clean and healthy.

Asking to be kicked and have posts removed this way just read as an insolent invitation for a fist fight. Grow up, or get out.
