wazzageek: Apologies to StarBlazer - I'm not getting at you, just using your quote to supply context ...)

Amazon and the ilk will not be paying New Zealand Tax either (unless I'm mistaken) - I believe that iTunes does?

Bricks and mortar shops also have to factor in shrinkage (I was lead to believe that a certain major chain store had a shrinkage rate of 33% - that included theft and losses due to damages in transit etc.)

No offence taken.  My comments were intended to be open and freely discussed.

I'm not sure whether it's iTunes or Microsoft (or one of the big companies) that has it's offices registered in Ireland due to favourable tax laws.  No of course Amazon etc won't be paying NZ tax but isn't this law about ensuring the rights holder and artist etc get the money they deserve.  So wherever I buy from they will get their respective cut.

You're thinking of Google, headquartered in Ireland for favourable company tax.

The point is that GST explains 15% of the difference between amazon's prices and the prices at NZ stores (whether online or bricks & mortar).

Point taken and thanks for clearing that up

Not any more. I hear spanking is illegal these days.

Ha ha

Nope they've been warned already.  I need t'internet for work - even excluding the fine I would be deep in smelly stuff if I were to get cut off - not to mention the hassle of changing providers.

Then again kids would probably take me to court for abuse of their human rights by taking tv/phone/internet etc from them - and they'd probably win!

ptinson:
Yes Telecom have 'fixed' IP addresses as well now.
If you are a customer from the beginning of this year you get one of those, and some other situations where an existing customer will get one as well.

TCL are not the only ones doing Fixed IP.

i have had a 'pseudo-static' ip address for years on callplus/slingshot.... it had a long DHCP lease of 30 days or so, so it effectively never changes.

You won't get cut off, the only risk is being fined.

I'm hypothesising based on when (IMO not if) they decide to enact the revision to include terminating user accounts.

Which IMO is a much worse occurrence than having to call up another ISP and get internet connected. Its not like the kangaroo court tribunal can order you off for good or anything.

How did you guess?  Born and raised in Manchester, lived in Yorkshire (I know normally mutually exclusive) and find Peter Kay a comedy genius.  Still laugh at that Chic-a-go filum :D
