TimA: Its good to see the far north towns getting UFB, kerikeri is one that deserves it.

Aunt lives there and dad wants to move there cause he hates the city. Now I wanna, fibre!

And with that use that's why it is slow. You should tell everyone on that cabinet to stop using internet, it'll speed things up for everyone.

Wireless RBI can happen, or even Wireless with an ISP if you're willing to pay for it however it sounds you're rather conflicted - you said you'll pay for it however now you're saying it can't happen?

All that really shows is your connection is nowhere near as bad as you claim it is. There are plenty of people in NZ stuck on truly poor connections who would love to be able to use that much data in a month.

We're on an Exchange, all Cabinets around us are getting ADSL2/VDSL2 upgrades.

Yes it is as bad as I claim it is, refer the graph on the very first post, while I can get line rate at night when sleeping downloading Linux ISO's and backups, during the evening when you want to watch Lightbox streams as I tried with the Invite I got (thank you Lightbox) the congestion makes that type of modern usage impossible. Wireless RBI with our usage is not going to happen unless we see basically unlimited when 4G happens. Wireless ISP is an option but moving into "The Renter" causes issues in the short term, for us at least.

We do have a lot of interest in town for a better service and whoever actually delivers a better service in the end and markets it well could end up with a nice earner.

298GB in one month i cant manage on my VDSL (Probe turned off as it uses 50GB a day :))
That does definitely go to show that your connection isnt poor, In fact quite usable.

There are already 2 WISP's with coverage in Outram.

I use 150 on 14/1, sooooo should be quite usable.

Also, on average 296GB a month should be about 2Mbps

No data drought – Vodafone doubles data for rural customers

Vodafone’s average rural broadband customer chews through 13GB of data per month
Average data usage by Vodafone’s rural customers has increased by 50% in the last 12 months.

To meet the increasing data demand by users in RBI areas, Vodafone has today doubled the monthly data allowance on its Rural Wireless Broadband plans – at no additional cost – in preparation for a hyper-connected rural future.

From today, all new and existing customers on Rural Wireless Broadband 4 plans will see an increase in their monthly data from 15GB to 30GB per month, without needing to do anything.

In addition to doubling data allowances, Vodafone will introduce a faster 42Mbps high performance wireless broadband modem for new rural broadband customers this month. The new modem is capable of typical download speeds between 16-20Mbps via Vodafone’s Dual Carrier 3G network.

Vodafone Consumer Director, Matt Williams, says the changes allow its rural customers to access more of the online content and services they need.

“Customers have told us the significant difference access to high-speed broadband makes to their everyday lives, so the availability of the faster modem, and increased data will be extremely beneficial.

“Basic online activities like web browsing, streaming content, and online shopping – things that are taken for granted in urban areas– are far more accessible.

“Independent speed tests completed in June 2014 by Epitiro show rural users are getting average speeds of 8Mbps with the current modem – greater than many people with ADSL connections in urban areas – so we’re confident the enhanced modem will be well received.”

Matt adds: “Data usage by rural dwellers is increasing too – whether it’s the teenagers downloading their friends’ videos from Facebook, kids uploading homework to the cloud, or the farm manager uploading data to a farm management system – so we wanted to ensure customers can do more of what the want and need to do online – without worry.”

Waipukurau farmer, Gus Smith, says signing up to Vodafone’s Wireless Broadband brought their home into the 21st century.

“Before RBI, watching TV on demand was impossible – our connection was unreliable, and streaming content chewed through our small monthly data cap which we needed for farming business. We just weren’t able to enjoy the internet like everyone else. Now we do.

“Wireless broadband can easily handle connecting multiple devices too, so when the grandkids come to stay at Christmas and want to connect and use their iPads and smartphones just like they do at home, they can.”

Under the Government’s five-year Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI), Vodafone is helping bridge the digital divide by funding the upgrade of 387 existing cell towers and building a further 154 new towers in rural areas across New Zealand.

Vodafone’s network upgrades under the RBI have already made wireless broadband available to over 195,000 rural addresses around New Zealand. The Vodafone network reaches 97.5 per cent of where Kiwis live, work and play.

There's differing ideas of usable...

Shown on the graph first post 0.4Mbps isn't usable for much other than waiting for lol cats pictures to download. Or one person watching low quality video. Modern interweb usage is multipule people using multipul devices at the same time 0.4Mb/s can't do that. My daughter can be doing stuff on the PC while I'm on the HTPC and chatting or catching up with geekzone rants on the Chromebook, 0.4Mb/s make that really dificult.

When it ramps back up to line rate as everyone goes to bed and my Linux ISO downloads and backups start it is certainly usable.

Better but still a big gap with how we use the interwebz, my Nexus4 is on an old iPhone plan with 3G of data (yea I consume it all too) so no discount there...

I'm sure with this and future 4G expansion Wireless RBI is a possibility for many but not us.

Really, you have to make a decision. Better Lifestyle (arguably) vs. More Services

I would not like to live rural, I like the city life.

You can live fringe urban (Dairy Flat, Mosgiel, Rangiora, Paraparaumu) and still receive urban services. Plus the big city isn't that far away.

If Outram was (somehow) closer to Mosgiel I think Tim's situation would be a lot better.

Which reminds me Tim...

(re-asking) where are you moving to, and what are the broadband services like? and
how is your petition coming along?
