Vodafone did not want LLU, just as Telecom did not. Vodafone wanted to enter the home broadband market via it's WCDMA network, and now this looks even harder for them. Vodafone NZ CEO stated that he wanted completion to come from networks (infrastructure) and not from LLU.

How will it make it harder for Vodafone? Unbundling isn't going to mean we're going to get 10Mbps flat rate internet for $9.95 per month as some people seem to think. Providers will still have to lease Telecom's circuits off them at a price that hasn't yet been announced but will possibly be around the $15 - $20  range per month. Reastically I wouldn't expect broadband price points to drop significantly from what it is at present in the immediate future, what we should see is better caps and better speeds.

The other factor we have in NZ is an extremely high cost of a local phone service. The operators that are going to gain from ULL are those who can also offer a phone service at a price point below Telecom's $40 odd per month. This is where the likes of Slingshot/Callplus could have a very significant impact on the marketplace very quickly - if they can offer you a highspeed high data cap internet connection and phone service for around the $60 per month then it's going to be a real wakeup call for Telecom.

One thing about free loaders is that Telecom have to do LLU but to get this faster broadband who is going to pay this??????

To shove some DSlams in the exchanges and a fatter pipe is going to cost ISP's dearly. Customer only want cheaper broadband - its  not a free lunch Im worried that we may get a better service speed etc but cheaper???  Look at Ihugs parent company in OZ they dont see to be making money in a LLU open market.

The rural people are really going to suffer.

I quote from Mr Cunliffe 'Don't expect to see a change for 1 to 3 years'. Good on Labour yet again late to the punch and too late to make a difference.

For Exactly the same reason as it will affect Woosh.

Yes..... and there is WWoosh Cry I shed a tear from them today, They were the only guys whom tried and did build their own network while all the other little moaning telco's sat and festered for 3 years. Good on you for trying woosh. You are truly good sports aside some niggly issues.

One last thing, We might finally be able to have DSL without having to have a antiquated, too-quiet analogue voice line at $40 a month.Laughing

Vodafone isn't an under capitalised company with a negative cash flow and a technology that still doesn't quite deliver on it's promised features. Therein lie 3 very significant differences.

Cunliffe said "2007 & 2008"
JC said "so 1 to 2 years?"
Cunliffe said "errr well, 3"

One positive thing to come out of this -

In the future you will not be able to blame Telecom for your slow broadband connection instead you can blame your ISP! Those Indian call centres will be flooded.

It would be nice to see broadband get a lot faster (and a ratio of 2:1 for download:upload speeds), and with naked dsl, that will leave a lot of kiwis with an extra $40 to spend...

maybe $10 more on cellphone calling
$10 more on a higher DSL plan
and $20 to cover some VoIP ?

Yes I know that, what I am saying is Vodafone also face the same reality as Telecom face, more competition in this market segment. This is not something Vodafone will be extramly happy about.

The Key thing is the long term here, I'm not sure if LLU will beneift NZ in the longer run of things.

Our wages are lower, our interest rates are higher but hey we will be in the upper quartile for boradband in the OECD - classic. Nice diversion from the real issues Labour.

I would still rather have a mortgage rate of 5% and be paying more for broadband. Oh well I will have cheap p0rn and free movies/music instead.

Now now... let's undo some negative spin here.

I think this is a great decision for Telecom. It will finally have a soft launch into a competitive market and be eased into providing innovative products and services. The market itself will expand and for all I know, Telecom may end up providing the best deal/service in that.

It's 2006... Telecom had no incentive to upgrade its network because it was making good money from the old one, old and overloaded as it was. What's to say that increased wholesale activity won't act as an incentive for Telecom to ensure that its network performs well?

Telecom will be experiencing a huge culture shock right about now. They have relied on their position for far to long and their arrogant monopolised culture which disseminates right through the business will be the death of them regardless how much money they throw at it.

It won't be long before TG is asked to move on. let's wait and see.
