I posted about this at the beginning of the year, since then have had an order open with Telecom and waiting for a result.  Recently they have come back and still refuse to connect a phone line into our property.

The street name is Tasman Heights, Glinks Gully.  Its part of a small settlement on Northlands West Coast, about 20min south of Dargaville.  Please note this is the actual phone line im referring to, not broadband.

The neighbours around us have phone lines, some of them with broadband too!  There is no cellphone reception in this area on any of the networks, its a complete DEAD spot.

We have to drive 1km to the top of the road to get reception and even then its patchy.  As a last resort I could just connect up with a neighbour but would rather try and avoid this if possible.  Is there anything at all we can do here?  No cellphone reception, no phone line, we are basically being left cut off from the outside world.  Isn't Telecom obligated under some agreement with the govt to provide a phone line?

I had a talk to Uber's CEO this morning.
He says last time they surveyed the area, there was only 4 houses interested. They have coverage nearby and it would have been quite easy to extend it down to the valley/beachfront.

But when they found a suitable spot for the transmitter, the landowner declined because he didnt want it also serving a nearby village, or other part of the village (local politics i didnt get exact details but they dont like each other) and the 4 houses wasnt enough to warrant the huge expense.

He did say that if the community wants to re-approach them, then uber are keen to help, but they dont want to be stopped by locals and their politics as although technically easy to extend coverage, cost is still a factor.

Well some good news relating to this, I decided to try ordering again through Vodafone having now heard nothing back from telecom. Chorus called me and confirmed there is infact a spare pair available in the main 50 pair cable from the top of road. He got a complete circuit from the cabinet on Turkey flat road right down to top of driveway st the local piller, however theres a fault somewhere on the cable from the pillar to the etp on the house which is getting addressed next week. The chorus guy said we are guaranteed a connection now.

Didnt follow up anything more regarding uber, installed outdoor wifi gear there today to run a local wisp. I know its slow band aparently from a 48 port conklin, however an upgrade is scheduled so ive heard and slow band is better than nothing for the time being. The line speed im getting is 7.5mbits adsl1. I haven't managed to achieve anything faster than 1.6mbits on speedtest.net and during peak hours its down to 0.25mbits, I was expecting something like this anyway.
