Is there one or two places (Twitter, Facebook, TXT, etc etc) where we can go if we suspect that the internet has gone down?

ISP connection failures can usually be spotted by looking at the modem lights, but what if local and/or international links fail?

Seriously though your ISP is still your first port of call with regards to this.
