- How much flexibility is there in the location of an ONT?
- Who pays for any internal running of fibre?
- Who can legally do it?
- How expensive is it e.g. per metre ?
Keen to here from anyone in Nelson who has had fibre connected - how flexible/helpful were the installers regarding internal wiring?
Background Info
Chorus are just running UFB in our street now. I got talking to one of the techs and found out they will use the existing ducts to the ETP, from an access hatch they have installed in our front garden [side note: I hope the hatch is waterproof, that garden has the mother of all irrigation systems]. On the positive side this means a secure serviceable tidy install.
Unfortunately a back to back install at the ENT point would be a very poor location from several perspectives. No power or data to that point, no space on the internal wall. I can't get power to that spot without pulling apart cupboards and opening up walls. To make matters worse, the existing phone cabling in our house (5 years old) is daisy chain wired cat 4.
Ideally fibre would run from the ENT, up inside a two level wall into the ceiling space (accessible, and spacious), across the ceiling and down into the upper level. I'm reasonably sure this is where the phone cabling runs.
I have power and data available at a suitable point in the office and have two cat-6 data cables (currently utilised) and the cat-4 phone cable to that point. Or I could create a new network hub for the ONT, modem, Wi-Fi inside the office cupboard
