  1. How much flexibility is there in the location of an ONT?
  2. Who pays for any internal running of fibre?
  3. Who can legally do it?
  4. How expensive is it e.g. per metre ?

Keen to here from anyone in Nelson who has had fibre connected - how flexible/helpful were the installers regarding internal wiring?

Background Info
Chorus are just running UFB in our street now.  I got talking to one of the techs and found out they will use the existing ducts to the ETP, from an access hatch they have installed in our front garden [side note: I hope the hatch is waterproof, that garden has the mother of all irrigation systems].  On the positive side this means a secure serviceable tidy install.

Unfortunately a back to back install at the ENT point would be a very poor location from several perspectives.  No power or data to that point, no space on the internal wall. I can't get power to that spot without pulling apart cupboards and opening up walls.  To make matters worse, the existing phone cabling in our house (5 years old) is daisy chain wired cat 4.

Ideally fibre would run from the ENT, up inside a two level wall into the ceiling space (accessible, and spacious), across the ceiling and down into the upper level.  I'm reasonably sure this is where the phone cabling runs.

I have power and data available at a suitable point in the office and have two cat-6 data cables (currently utilised) and the cat-4 phone cable to that point.  Or I could create a new network hub for the  ONT, modem, Wi-Fi inside the office cupboard

It seems to be fairly flexible; my parents had UFB installed a few weeks ago and dad had no trouble with getting the ONT installed in an internal cupboard. That involved bringing fibre under the driveway, up the side of the house, through the ceiling and finally down into the cupboard.

There were no charges. ISP is Vodafone, LFC is Chorus.

I ran my own cat6 prior to a VDSL2 installation, but I think the only impact this had was to make the Chorus guy happy — it was a free install so made no difference (except I paid $34 for the cat6).   If this was a just world, anything you did to make the fiber installation easier should impact on any costs, and the quality of your installation, but I suspect the Bill Gates 11 Rules of Life might apply.

Thanks.  Are they in Nelson too?

Anyone know what contractor physically does the house by house connection in Nelson.

Chorus vans are doing UFB work along the street if that helps.

If you look  at the vans carefully you will see the name of the contractor on it: Downer, Transfield or Visionstream.

Plenty of threads about this, for example this one and this one.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Thanks, I have done a search but couldn't identify a thread that relates closely to my situation i.e. default back-to-back option is not suitable (or feasible) and the desirable solution is not a quick and easy job.  The more threads I read, the less clear it all seems.  I still don't know: -

- How much flexibility I can expect on the part of install contractor in my area (Nelson)?
- Can I get someone else to run fibre within my house?
- How much should I expect to pay to have fibre run within my house?
- Can it be pulled along the same path as the existing cat-4 cables?

I was hoping an informed person might be able to answer my questions, rather than me infer from multiple threads applying to differing circumstances and locations.

In one of those threads (or a similar one) I talk about how the fibre to my house comes in overhead, goes down the outside of the house in conduit they provided, under the house in their conduit, up through a conduit I provided inside a wall, across the ceiling space in a conduit they fitted, then down into a cupboard in the centre of the house. They had no problem with it.

Chorus is you LFC and Transfeild will be the local contractor in Nelson

1. Resonably within reason - if the hybrid cable cant be drawn up in the wall, useing the existing hole,s be prepared for exposed cable runs - additional capping to cover the cables if you wish will be at your expence.

2. Chorus pays for the internal fibre as it forms part of their network (all the way to the ONT and the ONT itsself) - if you want additional Cat6 networking done @ the same time then you do - an exception would be if its for a Vodafone STB (Set top box) connection that is in a seperate location to the RGW (Router) then VF pay.

3. Only the Chorus contractors can, @ this stage, install their fibre cableing.

4. Only those with that info @ Chorus and the Cable manufactures would know that.

As for the Pit outside - I gather it is a round pit with a plastic lid ? if so it is a standard 'Hand-hold' . There will be nothing exposed to the elements in there that will be worried by a bit of water (a few metres of water presure above might be an issue but then it would be an issue for more than just your fibre connection smile)

Thanks for your answer, InstallerUFB.  Exactly the info I was after. If surface installation turns out to be the only option, we won't be installing fibre at all, and I can be really clear about that when booking.

The pit is rectangular about 400 x 800 and has an alloy lid.   Looks fairly robust.  It looks like a number of phone lines run under our section there.   I was impressed by how carefully it was installed.  They only move one plant, and that was a fairly tough one.
