I've recently moved into a semi-detached townhouse in Wellington and am keen to get UFB installed as the ADSL speed is poor. I have brought this up with our landlords and they are happy to proceed further but would like some more detailed information about how Chorus will install it in our property so they can discuss it with the Body Corporate.

I've read the pages about MDU installs on the Chorus website but am still a little unclear on the process... When I place a UFB order, will Chorus assess what work needs to be done before contacting the body corporate or other owners, or do they have to give consent before finding out exactly which install method will be used in this case? If I can give our landlords some more detail about how it will be installed I'm sure the conversation with body corporate will be much easier.

Sorry to say its a bit like which comes first the chicken or the egg

With out a request to connect (from your RSP) to Chorus, then Chorus wont be requested concent from Landlord/Body corp.

With out this concent approval the job stops

With concent- the job will go on to a designer (Chorus Contractor) for preliminary design (this is when they talk it through with Landlord/Body Corp about options etc).

(The Landlord/Body Corp could still say No at this stage )

From there an actual formal design is proposed to Chorus for their approval (costing, method etc)

If regected - Back to design and discusions over alternate methods and resubmition to Chorus.

If approved - the MDU build will procced and then your job wil go to the installers to compete the connection

If you are in a Chorus UFB area then as per our website ( https://www.chorus.co.nz/ufb-consents/apartments-office-buildings-resident-or-tenant/ufb-in-apartments-and-office-buildings-updated ) the trigger for anything happening is that you approach an ISP and order a service.

The ISP can tell whether consent is required by looking in our ordering system.
If consent is required, the ISP can tell whether that consent process has already been completed or not (another tenant may have already done all the work for you).

In your case it may be less of an MDU issue and more of a Right-of-Way consent process that might apply. Again, your ISP has visibility of the consent required and whether it has been received.

Once consents have been granted by all the owners, we will visit the site and confirm the type of installation required and will propose a solution to the owners. If the owners approve and (where required) agree to pay any additional costs, then we can schedule the building fit-out. Once the common cabling fit-out is complete (to each apartment), we can then proceed to install the fibre service to the apartment it was requested.
