The Wairoa District Council is planning a metropolitan WiFi network for the town.  Who owns the backhaul out of Wairoa?  I presume there is fibre between Napier and Gisborne, but is it open for new wholesalers or retailers to use?  The reason I ask is that the council's plan is to rate residents whether they use the new service or not. This will allow the council to undercut the existing suppliers and so make Chorus's copper system redundant. I can't see why Chorus should be happy with this, and simultaneously offer access to the backhaul out of the town.

Thanks in advance for replying.

Shorter "push for UFB reasons"

Without it, you end up being a second class town.  It's not (necessarily) a ticket to be an amazing standout -- but it is a necessary ticket to stay in the game.

Here in Whanganui the council has been behind the UFB rollout in a big way, and it's a testament to their support that our UFB network is complete.
