So I've been on the border of VDSL for some time and left with ADSL2.

Recently both the chorus site and NZ Broadband map are now showing that VDSL is available at my address

Now I'm wondering if the change is due to additional cabinets, or due to changes in their VDSL settings.

Based on my ADSL modem output It doesn't look like my line has improved recently. I'm hoping my high Line Attenuation is due in part to cabling in the house rather than to my house.

  • Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,5 / 0,0
  • Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 10,5 / 20,5
  • SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 13,0 / 12,5

Is there a tracker anywhere that would indicate why I'm now being offered VDSL?

Chorus has spent several months upgrading all ISAM broadband switches from Bandplan 997 to 998.

There has been more development of Bandplan 998 over recent years as it is more widely deployed around the world.  Deployment of Bandplan 998 means the cut-off for VDSL provisioning has jumped from 10dB to 15dB.

For a typical cabinet area the previous VDSL availability looked like:

It has taken several months to draw and check the 15dB shapefiles for thousands of cabinets, resulting in a wider coverage area that looks like:

Long story short, VDSL is now available to more customers on the copper network.
