I've used very few ISP's - started with CompuServe back in the day, then Paradise, and with ADSL had a great run with WXC. With fibre, they'd been taken over and I looked around and shortlisted two. Generally happy with my choice except for one thing I didn't pick up on. Rather than use VOIP connected to the router, theirs is built in to the router - and they LOCK the router. I can (and have) request changes - but it's a brave new world. The only way to get access to it is to go back to WXC (or another) for VOIP - which I may do - and then I can use a router of my own choice. Or I could see ojut the two years and then change ISP.

Meantime I have a printing problem and the best the ISP can do is suggest I go back to Brother - who made my laser MFC printer a few years ago. This has been functioning for years and has been problematic only since fibre, so I am not going back to them. But I don't have enough knowledge to tell my ISP what they have to change.

The printer is connected (by cable) to the router (actually via a switch). We usually print when we're connected by cable in the offices. When we're printing from the living area (infequent printing from here) it has been having no end of troubles. My wife finally clicked that if we connect to the WIFI access point (also in the offices) it's fine. It's only when we connect to the router itself by WIFI we cannot print. Seems to be a connectivity issue. Because we we don't usually connect manually via WIFI we don't usually know how we're connected - hence the uncertainty. Now we know to check it's not so bad.

But we need to know of some setting in the router that might be causing this problem - then we can ask it be changed. Trouble is - what? Usually we'd suck it and see - trying things until we get it. But here we're in the dark. Anyone got a light? Thanks.

I've seen this issue where there is no traffic passed between the router's wifi and the ethernet ports. I have this now with an Orcon supplied NF4V router.

The easiest way to see what is, or is not, happening, is to use an app called "Fing" on a smartphone. This app will display all devices it can contact on your network. You can get it to try pinging devices shown as well.

At least this will narrow down the problem and give some insight.
