Xnet have managed to irritate me into jumping ship, I've been with them for 5 years+ (at about $100+ per month) and I want to switch to another one of their plans and they want to lock me into a 12 month contract for the privilge :-(

So I see lots of new ISPs since I last looked,, anyone got some opinions on who I should deal with ?

Customer support is somthing I value in a company even when I barely make use of it, so any tales of joy or woe on that I'd like to hear, as well as the technical side of their business.

Thanks!

Maxnet's FYX looks pretty well priced as a pay as you use ISP $30.30 + 30c per Gig.
Telecom aren't doing too bad - good caps and good service IMHO (I am on Telecom)

Hump

Telecom: Landline + DSL good balance of price/performance
Snap: Naked DSL with large data cap (250GB addon)
Fyx: Cheaper than Xnet pay as you go pricing
Maxnet: Un-metered plan that isn't oversubscribed

On the Fence

Vodafone: New plans coming in June apparently
Telstraclear Cable: Plans aren't very flexible but where else are you going to get 2Mbit up if you are out of VDSL2 range

Dump

Telstraclear DSL: Long helpdesk wait times, plans aren't competitive unless you get a special deal from a door knocker or retentions
Xnet: New plans were 8 months late and uncompetitive
Slingshot: Cheap but nasty, oversubscribed and traffic managed out the wazhoo
Orcon: Seem to have regular performance and customer service issues

Thanks for this thread. I'm on the hunt for a new provider too. I might be paying too much on my current one. But if Ragnor is right about VF coming up with new plans next month, I might hold on to them a little longer.

Holy .. Snap have some serious data caps! 560GB .. yes please :-)

How are they for performance ? For that much data they must be throttling you somewhere ?

Thanks for starting this one up Mark.

I just joined the forum to ask this very question.
We're currently with Xnet too. While I have also been with them for about the same length of time their service has been pleasant. Good on the phone support and answering quickly. Not many outages and stable and constant speeds but sadly they have become uncompetitive with regards to data allowances.
I felt the 5gb/month for off contract and 15GB/month on contract may have been in line several years ago but with other ISPs recently updating their plans it actually borders on insulting and (this is just my personal feeling) but maybe shouldn't have bothered with somewhat frugle offers.

Having vented my frustrations I still rate Xnet's service and I do believe you get what you pay for to some degree but Snap's service are looking increasingly attractive. Have already spoke to them and they sound pleasant to deal with.
It's pretty incredible with all the options and tech we have I still find Telcos, ISP's, etc. still seem intent on making it way too complicated for the customer. But then I suppose there would be less tech forums thenWink

I will be joining another ISP off contract so I can leave my options open.

It's been great to be able to read all you're posts guys. Thanks for the info.
Geekzone seems like a sweet place.... add that to the bookmark bar and morning coffee n' browse routine.

I've also been looking around. Am on Telecom business but have finished the contract period now. Was on Orcon (who were great to deal with back in the dialup days, did multi-channel bonding with a bit more reliability than e3 - who I was with before Orcon) then Xnet. Really liked the pay as you go model on Xnet but peak time performance was crap a few years back so switched to Telecom who have been very reliable and consistent.

I like the Fyx pricing model but they don't do static IPs. With the data doubling for Total Home users not applicable to business connections I don't feel I owe Telecom anything. I've been gravitating towards Snap but am not totally sure about it being in Northland with their South Island focus. I see in older threads they should now have a fairly national presence on handovers so latency shouldn't be a problem, anyone here up North with any experience on that front?

Telecom. I used to be with them about 5 years ago, and never thought I would go back after, but their new plans were too good. My old ISP updated their plans but they still were not up to scratch. Also there service is good, no waiting on hold, and they actually reply to emails, and within a day too.

That option of a static IP is being added very shortly, in case that's important to anyone.

I think I might toss a coin between Snap and Fyx.

Thanks for the tips!

Definitely +1 for Snap. I personally haven't noticed any differences in speed whatsoever since they introduced their massive data caps. Also they have an unmetered Steam server which is just the icing on the cake.

Hello
Snap are quite good with their customer service. I like dealing with them. I can speak to them right here in Chch I have spoken to a couple of their techs and are helpful when I ask them to run speed tests. They take the time to explain the results.

The Complex Broadband team at telecom are ok if you get the right tech.
The customers hate speaking to telecom. They tell me they can never understand their foreign accents. Many of telecoms customers have told me they just hang up on them.
