Today.. all I get for non NZ sites is this...

This happens more times in the last few days, than in the whole year before GO LARGE

  • If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
  • To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

    click  Detect Network Settings

  • If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.

Are you sure this is not on your configuration? Has anyone else seen this? If you manually configured your network, are you absolutely sure the correct DNS addresses were entered?

If this is a DNS problem on the network side, it is probably something temporary. Outages happen.

Many times we read about IHUG's problems with their email servers or TelstraClear mini-outages in Wellington, etc.

I wouldn't go calling the whole service "junk" for a temporary condition. If this persists for more than a few hours then we can start screaming...

Yes I too was seeing those issues, particularly on weekends, and following the advice of a very helpful CSR, I switched to the Xtra Pro Plan, and well I have seen perfect service, excellent latency, and fantastic download speeds.

Of course the first level of vocal firewall at Xtra told me it would be no better to move to the pro plan, its not till you start digging deeper till you meet the CSR's which have experienced the issues first hand and give you some honest truths.

Please note this is not trying to incite anything negative towards Xtra, Im sure the initial people you talk to when calling the helpdesk are just working off the information given, but it would appear there are some of us who have issues outside the norm, and throwing money at the problem seems to fix it.

try putting 202.27.184.3 and 202.27.184.5 as your DNS settings in your tcp ip properties
instead of the ip of your router as the DNS Server

Or 202.27.158.40 and 202.27.156.72. These are the newer xtra DNS servers.

Or your could just do a nslookup and see if you can resolve hostnames, if not then ping the dns servers listed and if you can do that then you can be pretty sure its a dns issue and you can set these manually.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I'm also having this same problem.
Every so often I get that error and after pressing "Try Again" (Firefox 2.0) it can get the the site.

I'll try adding the Xtra DNS servers to my TCPIP settings and see if that helps.
