Yes I admit it. I know very little about the telecommunications industry and I feel that this has to change.

I'd like to know:

a) basics... how they work, how they hook up, the nitty gritty detail of it
b) what the current state of the environment in NZ is like, why does Telecom and Vodafone have the monopolies etc.
c) current trends in terms of new technologies coming into the market and how they can change things for the better/worse

Thanks, I did give that a go but something as basic as a 101 seemed hard to find. Perhaps my ability to search was impaired by a lack of sleep but I couldn't find just a single page that talked about it.

probably the best thing to do would be to get a job with a telco and they will give you training that explains this sort of thing :P

Sign up for their newsletter, if you can without becoming a member (although membership is pretty cheap for individuals IIRC). Always good info on what's going on. Also follow some telco types on twitter, although you'll only get the odd snippet this way. Seek out telecommunications blogs, there are plenty.

Do some reading (try Wikipedia) on Telecom, Vodafone NZ, Telstraclear, etc. to get a picture of the current state of the NZ industry and the history.

For the technology side; most of the terms are described on Wikipedia, in some detail.

Try forums like Whirlpool and, uhh, this one :)

And if you are really keen, have a look for a primer on Amazon about telecommunications. They might not give you the state of play in NZ but might give you somewhere to start looking.

BTW. Rough figures on customer base: Telecom: 50%, TCL + Voda: 30% Slingshot: 10% others: 10%
