Ok, im moving out of my parent's house to go out to the big world Laughing and im going to go flatting with some of my mates, and we are discussing what provider, we what a cheap one less than $100 but also has large ish gb maybe 60 and Im just wondering what's the best ISP for price and speed per gb.

we do what a home phone also.

and we are mainly gamers so yer :-D

Ive been looking at slingshot unlimited which is here (broadband only)
    http://www.slingshot.co.nz/homeline-and-broadband/our-plans/

and also Ive heard quite a lot of good stuff from telstra clear but they are bit more expensive.

I was just asking what's the 'best'?

  • And where would you be exactly?
  • Have you looked in a Chorus map to see if you can have any variant of DSL/DSL2/VDSL?
  • How far from a cabinet?
  • If not in a cabinet area how far from an exchange?
  • Is it a TelstraClear HFC area (CHC, Wellington, Kapiti)?

edit: ^^^^ and what he said too!

Very subjective, and everyone has an opinion, but I'd recommend that you look at Snap! too.

We are going to be in a Ufb zone! How do you find, how far away the cabinet is?

Don't expect to get UFB in a large apartment block any time soon.

Good work on moving out. Your not a Palmy Boys fella are you?

Anyway, I will be the first to recommend Snap. They rank the highest almost every time in TrueNet's monthly test results for throughout. Have a look at where Slingshot come in that. I would also always steer clear of unlimited plans as you will be on here in a month saying that your speeds are reduced to nothing at peak times and we will laugh and say thats because your plan is unlimited. I think Snap have a Steam cache - I'm not a gamer so don't know for sure. Would probably benefit you though. Also you can start with ADSL and then move to VDSL or UFB when it becomes available but like sbiddle says apartment blocks are still seen as the devil to Chorus when it comes to UFB.

Ask the building manager for the apartment building. Some of the inner city buildings have Citylink fibre connections that then connect to the apartments and might be a good option.

I would recommend Slingshot. I'm on their unlimited plan and have no problems at all apart from the occasional slow down during the evening, but it does not affect gaming in any way shape or form. I play CSS mostly and my ping sits at around 6ms for local servers and 35 to 50 for Australian servers.

Slingshot has a Steam/torrent cache too.

In this case the ISP you end up going with could likely be defined by availability within the area/building.

Of course you can!

These days I would never move in anywhere without checking internet access and availability before I moved.

Snap has this too, but torrent cache?

Snap's cache is zero-rated too (last time I checked)
