I was browsing Wikipedia recently after deciding that even after naked DSL Telecom would be charging too much, and came across Ronja, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RONJA which uses an LED to provide digital access up to 1.4km and 10Mb/s.  So of course my question is anyone in NZ using this or something similar?  Optical would better because you don't need a radio license although you do need line of sight.

I do know of various local companies that are providing similar lazer links.
The real problem with this sort of stuff, especially over such a distance is that if its raining, its useless. I think the most popular uses for these types of links are a school or business campus where they are trying to extend a network over a short distance without doing any digging.

Wifi or wimax would be a better solution because you can increase the range at a faster rate than you would expierence a drop in speed, and its tolerance of the weather. The other thing is wifi and wimax would require less relay towers to cover an area.

The LED / Lazer links however wouldnt have any interference from other radio equipment.

I take it you can't buy these LEDs from DSE or Jaycar for a few cents then

Laser links are good for up to around 5km at 100mb, or 2.5km at 1gb

Laser is not subject to rain, however can be to fog...

And I don't doubt that there are different types of lazers with different characteristics. For example that 3D video camera (which uses a type of raydar to bounce off surfaces & into the camera into a pixel matrix) lets you see through fog and even through window blinds & thin walls like tents.

There is a crowd in Chch which runs gigabit wireless networking off the hills. It is used by the council, buses and other business as well. I looked at spending 5K , putting up my own tower and paying money each month for a connection and reselling bandwidth to locals a wireless connectivity. It would cost you around 300-400 per month to hook in but it is very very very fast.  Unfortunately Telecom cut their 10Gb plans from 900 plus to under 100 and undercut the idea.

The equipment is a bastardisation of the film industries which allowed gig bit wireless networking with pictures. Someone whipped off the picture stuff nad added Ethernet capability. ... or at least that is what I have heard.
