Hi guys,
I've been loving Spotify for nearly a year now I think. I didn't realise that under the hood it uses P2P to get most of its music content to other users around the world. Pretty logical I guess, but I hadn't thought about it. Anyway, we just upgraded from ADSL to VDSL at home, and our upstream has gone from 1M to over 9M. I've just noticed this morning that our data usage has skyrocketed. Bitdefender is up to date and reports no problems, all Windows updates are installed, etc. I'm a heavy Spotify user, big offline caches, etc. I'm suspecting that Spotify has eaten my data away. My desktop likes to wake itself up and I hadn't been home much or been bothered to turn it off the last week or so, so it's been happily uploading gigs of data every day. I'm averaging about 3.5gb a day of uploading while not even being home.
Anyway, just wanted to give a heads up to new VDSL users who may also be Spotify users. Please enable your firewall monitoring and make sure Spotify is not uploading too much.. After work today I'll have to figure out how to block those p2p ports in Windows firewall (or perhaps on the router) and try and change our data plan so my partner and I can work remotely on our work from home days.
