Hi guys,

I've been loving Spotify for nearly a year now I think. I didn't realise that under the hood it uses P2P to get most of its music content to other users around the world. Pretty logical I guess, but I hadn't thought about it. Anyway, we just upgraded from ADSL to VDSL at home, and our upstream has gone from 1M to over 9M. I've just noticed this morning that our data usage has skyrocketed. Bitdefender is up to date and reports no problems, all Windows updates are installed, etc. I'm a heavy Spotify user, big offline caches, etc. I'm suspecting that Spotify has eaten my data away. My desktop likes to wake itself up and I hadn't been home much or been bothered to turn it off the last week or so, so it's been happily uploading gigs of data every day. I'm averaging about 3.5gb a day of uploading while not even being home.

Anyway, just wanted to give a heads up to new VDSL users who may also be Spotify users. Please enable your firewall monitoring and make sure Spotify is not uploading too much.. After work today I'll have to figure out how to block those p2p ports in Windows firewall (or perhaps on the router) and try and change our data plan so my partner and I can work remotely on our work from home days.

They don't force facebook login, I joined with an email address. If you don't want the app to run in the background uploading data, kill it or set it up that way. I only use it on my phone, hopefully that doesn't upload loads of data.

I don't really like it anyway, not a great interface, music selections are pretty poor too. I'll probably just keep using Pandora.

does Pandora support offline caching? No good for my train commute if it doesn't.

interestingly I too have just upgraded to vdsl and also use spotify. I use it mostly on my phone and keep the desktop version off but thanks for the heads up. Am keen to know if you can turn off the p2p or at least block it.

this has been quite a controversial topic with spotify..

when i first started using it, i was rather concerned it would be the cause of horrid upload spikes.. turns out, for me atlest, it doesnt.

it really matters about what circles you listen to.. you can try to block it, but it will still leak a little.

i put it down to, is the risk of it sharing something your willing to commit to?

then again, i argue it from the point of view of downloading linux distros, do you feel obliged to help spread linux to make up for downloading it, keep its costs down, support it?
that could make up for my indifferences in opinions...

I don't think spotify's web player would do this?

https://play.spotify.com/home

A possible solution?

Don't listen to Top40 music and odds are you'll be fairly safe from P2P traffic. :)
