So, i have a question, could we have a cable like this, say with brazil and then have it connect with europe to avoid US spying?

i realise we're one of the five eyes nations and whatnot but lets just pretend in this hypothetical situation we've booted john key out and someone with half a brain tells them to go away and stop spying on us...

would there be much traffic going down the cable between brazil - NZ and NZ - EU?
what would the latency be like? would it be any better to the EU than it currently is now going via the US?

I don't think John Key or any prime minister gets to choose if we can or cannot be part of 5 eyes...

...and for that reason, I doubt Brazil want's to share traffic with us directly.

IMHO

Personally I'm OK with NZ being part of the "five eyes" provided extradition laws are (and remain) sane here... Can't say I'm really an expert on what they currently are though.  (EDIT: and I suppose I am talking about how they affect me personally here, ignoring wider potential abuses of the system - industrial espionage, etc?)

They are always what they have been - whatever the govt of the day translates them as.

the US's reputation has become questionable lately and if i did have another option, to route my traffic via brazil instead of the US when it doesnt need to go to the US, i would.

i mean, i dont have anything to hide but i still dont want someone else looking at it all.

Do you seriously think traffic heading to or coming away from any such cable couldn't/wouldn't be intercepted?

This is simply a political statement that the Brazilians don't like the US,

I doubt they really believe the Euros would not peek on it....
