I live in a rural area (Te Kowhai) and our house is really close to the TKW/A exchange. On a good day I'll get 4 Mb/s down but at night that can drop to < 1 Mb/s.

A couple of years ago FX Networks laid fibre down our road as one of the main Hamilton/Auckland loops. I know I can't connect directly to that, but it seems a waste to have such poor service considering the cabinet is sitting right on top of the fibre.

Can anyone give me any insight into any plans to upgrade the TKW/A exchange or if I should be getting better service from it? I've tried asking Chorus and my ISP (Snap, previously Telecom) directly and haven't had a response. From Chorus' website it's currently a PCM 24 RU Mini Cabinet and has no notification date. It looks like there are still 345 of this type of cabinet around the country (out of 6972 in total).

Thanks for any help.

If it's not on the Chorus website under RBI upgrades then it's not going to be upgraded.

Sounds like you're probably on a Conklin, in which case you're basically just unlikely.

Thanks. Is there any official channel to ask for it to be upgraded? I know it probably won't have an impact, but if enough people in the area ask you never know...

In the last 5-10 years there has been an increase in the number of lifestyle blocks in the area which is placing pressure on the infrastructure.

In areas where the copper infrastructure isn't being upgraded, the RBI solution being provided for you is RBI wireless. It looks like you're within a coverage area for this so would be able to move to this today.

I can see you're new around here but there are probably 50+ threads on here discussing this very same issue from the past year or so. To save repeating everything that's in those threads it'll probably pay to browse a few of them if you want to learn more.

If you're unhappy with wireless RBI raise your concerns with MBIE and Commerce Commission - they are effectively the ones who have decided on this solution for you because it's not cost effective to upgrade the fixed line infrastructure.
