The pictures below show what the guys have done to connect our house to the road.

Instead of putting the cables under the drive way they put a pipe next to the fence. As you can see in the second picture, when it comes into my property, the pipe is between the retaining wall and my neighbor's fence. Technically the pipe is in my neighbor's property.

Is this how they normally do it? I thought they needed to dig the driveway and bury the cables under the driveway. It just seems to me that they have not done it properly? Will not putting cables under the ground affecting my internet speed? Will it more likely to break say in 10 to 20 years?

Also because it's not underground, who would be responsible for fixing it if the conduit is damaged?

I would have thought getting it from the street to your door would be your own cost? i.e. if you want it under the driveway you need to dig up your driveway. Can't see Chorus or the ISP paying for this.

As said above I'd have thought the tacking it along the fence is "okay" practise, though the part where it goes to your neighbours property would be subjective.

I would be interested to see an industry professional's opinion on this along with any other people who may have had similar installations.

I don't think so. I signed up a 12 months contract with Slingshot and they said they'd give me a free installation

Ultrafast dug our driveway. Took them 1.5 days job for that only. No extra cost whatsoever

I think what he meant is that Chorus will "get the job done" for free (which I'm pretty sure the Government pays for... ?) but if you want a "better job" then it's at your own cost.

How long is your driveway? It took 3 guys two days putting the pipe to my house as shown in the pictures above...

But what kind of driveway? Cement/seal or gravel/dirt? If cement/seal did they replace it afterwards?

Pretty sure they have to cover cost of install up to so many meters, and this changes depending on installer (ie Chorus) and how fibre arrives (street or power pole).

I think the above install looks horrible due to the bright white conduit. But would probably think it'll last longer. Less impact from dirt, less moisture around it since it'll only get wet when directly rained on unlike if it was buried etc. But probably more susceptible to damage, like car hitting it maybe, damage when gardening or whatever. I think it'll be fine though. They wouldn't install something if its not acceptable practice.

personally i wouldn't want them to trench/dig my driveway up and end up with a 300mm wide new section - it would look well ugly and possibly settle over time relative to the existing driveway = not good.

and the cost of a new full width driveway would be pretty expensive/prohibitive.

if they however offered to drill a duct in place and thread the fibre through that - that would be acceptable - but again - not cheap.

my guess - what they have done is the most time and cost effective option for them - and in the balance of things probably reasonable imho.

Did they say why they were unable to use the existing conduit for your copper line?

I think it used to be 50M and they extended it to 200M.
