Hi,

Just found out last night that the real reason I am unable to get broadband out swanson, is that there's no space left at the MASSEY 3 Exchange, and not because I was too far away from the exchange as Slingshot has told me.

Anyone have any ideas what the next step would be? Canvas the street in hope of signing up X amount of people to a petition requesting more connections?

My other options at my current location are: Vodaphone, Satellite, or BushInternet's amazingly low priced (NOT) service.

Also, no ETA was available from telecom as too when they might decide to upgrade the exchange.

Any ideas welcome :)

Morgan.

If there was a high volume competitevly priced plan available, then yes I'd consider it. But currently:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/personal/plans-services/plans/3G-broadband-and-data/3g-broadband-plans.jsp = 404

:)

[edit...]

Ah.. found the plans at : https://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-data/3g-broadband-plans.jsp

Broadband Pro. 3Gb $70/month on a 24month contract, or 6Gb for $80/Month. extra data at 50c/Mb (That makes it $500/Gb)

as i said, competitevly priced...

I average around 10Gb a month, so that would make Vodafone very happy am sure... $2080/Month ? no thx :)

snappernet.co.nz
24 Port ADSL2/2+ IP DSLAM

Model No. DV3600S
SRP: $8264

4 months and I can bu ymy own gear...

I think Vodafone and Telecom offer some good price in mobile broadband.

First you can't compare mobile data and wireline data. They serve different customers.

Second, cost is directly related to beefit. If you must have broadband and can't have a wired line, well, then the next solution available costs more. You would have to evaluate your needs. Is broadband something you must have otherwise your business fails? In this case, paying a bit more to have the service might be the only solution.

Then you compare how much we pay in New Zealand for 6 GB here (NZ$80) and how much Vodafone charges for 2 GB in Australia (AU$129.95). Unbelievable, but New Zealand mobile data is actually cheaper than some other countries.

freitasm: I know they are aimed at two different markets, and yes I am aware that it'll cost more due to lack of options. I wasn't aware that Oz had such high mobile data prices! Wow! Maybe we should ask them if they want to swap their land based services for our mobile ones? :)

wmoore:  :P Thank you! I was actually wondering about having to bribe someone for theirs ;) Mmmm... Wonder if telecom has a queue system for BB connections...

But back on topic, Is there any way of getting telecom to add more hardware? or any other isp? Surely I must not be the sole person left in Massey wanting BB?

oh and div id mcWindow_o_div is reluctant to leave...

:P

Have you had a look at Compass wireless?  They have coverage all over the place. I am going to look at using it with a VFX connection when I move houses in Jan if Naked DSL is not mainstream in the market yet.

Cheers

Here's an idea, try signing up with Xtra and see what happens.

I dont think that would make any diffence as I have had xtra connections declined as no ports available at an exchange.
as for one customer giving another customer their access I dont think it works that way. I suggest you talk to someone more in the know at telecom

It shouldn't matter - if there isn't enough room, it will fail, regardless of whether its Telecom broadband (xtra), or wholesale (xnet etc). From that link to game planet is a different as in that case, it appeared to be a tech who put through a connection request after completing line checks - which should have ended up with the ISP of the customers choice but ended up with Xtra. EZAS had it on the mark.

Of course, it doesn't stop the professors on gameplanet who obviously know better and everyone else is lying!

- I am inquring with Compass, but like all other wireless services in west auckland, they all use the Waikamete Reservoir transmitter. Why isn't anyone using the Waiatarua transmitter? At least I can see that one :)

- Vodafone only supports GPRS in my area, so I might as well get Dialup.

- Satellite is definitly not an optiion (1. setup cost, 2. latency, 3. patchy service due to weather, 4. I had it for 2yrs, not again)

Found this which is of relevance: http://www.sumware.net/other/index.php (50+ people signed the petition, and telecom only upgrade the local exchange to support 24)

So, following in their footsteps I am currently drafting a small survey to drop in everyone's mailbox around the area. I'd appreciate any comments regarding it ;)

Compass have some legacy 5.8 gear off Waiatarua. You could try them.
Only the wired country AP's are located at Waikumete.

Arataki: and woosh, and Xnet's wireless service... But thanks for the info re: legacy gear at waitarua, I'll ring them up and find out if they still allow people on it.

So since i've moved in I've tried to get broadband 4 times :) 3 different companies, Xnet twice, slingshot once and xtra once.

Xnet came back saying "Too far from the Exchange!", and the next one was "No more space at the exchange!"

Slingshot came back with "Too far from the Exchange!"

and Xtra with "I am sorry but the cabinet your line is connected too doesn't support BB..."

Guess what? I'm going to sign up again! Trying to see how many different answers I can get from them :)

I have a relative at Swanson who gets broadband from Wired Country via the Waikumete transmitter and it is working well.

Also, Kordia have Extend customers working via Waiatarua.  This is a recent development and they have a special offer going until the end of November, as you can see from the following page on ICONZ's web site:

http://www.iconz.net/promo/ptchev/index.php

There's a couple of wireless options for you.  Good Luck with getting connected Smile

Legacy 5.8GHz gear on Waitarua is being decomissioned - the additional coverage this offered over Waikumete and Albany Hill (covers a far way out west suprisngly) is/was marginal.

Extend Homeline is avalaible off Waitarua as others have pointed out, $$$ install normally for not much in the way of download speeds and you are not allowed to run more then two VoIP service flows over it concurrently technically - chance of this being monitored is pretty low to nil however.

Is Extend Homeline the same as Extend Lite?
