We are moving to Te Ohaki (a rural area north-west of Huntly) next month and I'm wanting to know which companies to contact to get quotes for rural broadband.

The Chorus map gives our new address network capability of RBI Broadband > 5 Mbps. Lightwire is first on my list to ring - who else should I contact?

We will be wanting a plan with a decent data allowance, preferably 80+ GB.

The place we are moving to is a bare section of land, so no existing broadband connection! We'll be in a caravan initially. There does seem to be a Telecom connection at the gate.

Hi Emily,

RBI broadband >5 Mbps means this is an upgraded rural broadband area. Therefore served by fibre fed cabinet or exchange and ADSL2+ or VDSL2 (if close enough) is available subject to line distance, quality of copper etc etc. Ideally if you are close enough to the exchange or cabinet, then fixed line broadband will be the way to go.

Unfortunately, there are some risks with rural areas, so you could run the cables from your house to the road then find:
- no spare cable pair to serve you
- degraded copper making your phone and broadband run poorly
- loading coil on the line, thus broadband not possible

There is probably no way to tell if the above will happen until you get the cable laid to road and order phone & broadband service but generally you are trenching for power too, so dropping the phone cable in the trench is still worthwhile.

Alternatives to fixed line are RBI Wireless, or if available Fixed Wireless. I do installs in this area for http://www.ultimatebroadband.co.nz/rbi-wireless.html and we are hoping to do RBI Wireless over 4G within the next few months.

If you are happy to message me (don't post in the forum) the proposed address, I can give you an idea of fixed-line broadband speed or if RBI Wireless will be an option.

Cheers
Fraser
