So, I find myself in a position of having to rent a place temporarily for a few months while major renovation work occurs at our place.

I need to get Internet up and running - only on DSL - but can't commit to a 12-month contract as I won't be there for 12-months.

Having a look round the main players - Voda, Spark, Snap, Orcon, WXC (are they still around?) - I'm left wondering who would be a good outfit to go with?

What are people's thoughts... remembering no term contract.

Voda is out of the picture - shame - as they don't do open term.

Yeah, was thinking that. But I don't know if theres a master filter installed at this place... and I wasnt keen on spending $400 for a vdsl modem.... ;-)

You can get a very good VDSL modem for around $200.

If you want a free VDSL modem, no ISP is going to offer 'no contract' on that.

If its in a VDSL zone then your ADSL is likely to be pretty good anyway - likely more than 15Mbps, so probably just go for that and then just grab an ADSL modem for $50 if you don't already have one.

Why not do a house move with your existing ISP and then move back again?
If they won't let you do that,(maybe for a small fee - it will still be cheaper than running two connections at two properties at the same time) then maybe consider switching isps altogether, since that sounds pretty unreasonable.

Current supply is TCL Cable via Voda. Everything works reliably.

Change would be to DSL incl part month charges etc. Scared.

I agree with sentiment, I would have hoped my ISP could cope, I just have no confidence in things being transferable easily and reliably without drama, for which GZ is stuffed to the gills with.

Draytek Vigor 130 for $151... wish I had one of my ex TCL VDSL modems.... ah well....

I didn't think moving constituted a break in the contract?

You could try Snap , take the contract and free modem  . With snap the contract is with you not your address, so you can move back to your old place and just stay with snap and your contact wont be broken.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

VF cable is far superior to xDSL, even with its current congestion problems and legendary after-sales service.

Lateral thinking:

You are renting.
You might be able to come to some agreement with the current cable account holder to continue the service for another few months, at your expense.
(The cable modem belongs to VF)

And yes, if you want to get DSL with no contract, you won't be getting any free modems.

My bad folks, I wasn't very clear.

I have cable at my current place, as most people know. It was installed in 2006, and has been almost bullet proof except for the rare outage.

The place I'm moving to has no cable, only a Chorus line. If it did, I would have picked everything up and reconnected at the new place without a hitch and there would be no thread.

On paper, it should be very easy to temporarily move houses;
1/ suspend but not disconnect current services using cable
2/ enable new services at new location
3/ on completion rq services in (2) and reactivate (1)

In practise though, Geekzone is full of threads of people struggling in general to work via Voda customer services.

I'm really familiar with the systems being used - I worked at TelstraClear for many years - and they were good, robust systems that relied 100% on the quality of the human doing the work. There was very little automation - meaning you could talk to a human, explain in detail what you're trying to do, they would understand and put stuff in motion.

Automating life in general is very hard to do, as most people know. My unique requirements don't fit the partial automation in place. I can see it turning awful very easily, which is sad - and I only need to be out for a short period, and dont need the stress of trying to activate services that were rq'd in error, and being told I have to go on a new traffic throttled plan (which Im not on right now).

Vodafone address checker can't offer VDSL at the property because the systems are hard wired to offer only cable or ADSL2 over UCLL. Ordering a Chorus VDSL service is a no-no option, even though every other ISP offers it.

Anyone, that's why I was scared of even approaching my current ISP, and was looking for an alternate short term.

bigpipe and snap seem good offers, and trademe is replete with VDSL2 modems, most seemingly ex Telecom.
