link to Ars report

Take with a grain of salt but why are we (NZ) listed as having 13.6 Megabit average download speed? Does this include non-consumer connections?

The graph is for average advertised download speeds so I'm assuming it has nothing to do with real world speeds, so all these "upto 8mbit" and "upto 25mbit" connections averaged out would probaby be around the 13~14mbit mark

Yay, we beat the Australians!

But our average is determined also by the number of ISPs in NZ. As we have a generalised ADSL/ADSL2+ (and in some parts Cable) we actually have a higher average due to the reduced number of ISPs. Therefore, we might suck when providing broadband services, but we still have a 'higher advertised speed'.

It accualy states Avrage ANVERTISED broband download speed.

Thatmeans there has to have been a lot of ADSL2+ advertised in october 2007 In saying that how meny adds aculy state the (MAX) speed
of the connection ? give me a 2Mbps/2Mbps ATM stile line with unlimited traffic for arround $US20 a month and i woldent complain.

Yes, we all know that it's an average ADVERTISED broadband speed.

What a waste of time then! Why can't the report collaters investigate a bit further and average out the real-world speeds? I mean are teltsra cable broadband users averaging 10 megabit on there lightspeed connections? I average about 3 megabit on xtra with nz sites.

Again, how does this report help anyone? - who wants to know about 'advertised' speeds?!

That's the thing.

They can't just have a person go test EVERY SINGLE ISP's connection, average them for the country. By the time they do that, we'll all be on fibre and getting who-knows-what speeds.

Hmmm...I'd still be surprised if advertised speeds in NZ approached 13 megabit!!!

Speedtest.net puts us at 2622kbps on avarage, this seems more like it.

I can't say I've ever had internet that slow though, mines always up around 7900kbps when I test there.

What  it will be is all the company's that say "as fast as your line will go" or whatever will be put in the "fastest"  collium then thay will look up what  the fastest DSL technology in New Zealand is and put it down as max speed ADSL2+ at 24Mbps. It is just that telecom is to stingy to install ADSL2+ DSLAMs in many exchanges and that ISPs are not installing there own

928kbps is my current max download speed according to speedtest.net (used to be twice that but been bad ever since someone damanged our street phone lines and since they repaired them its been degraded ever since) I've never complained to Telecom as you cant pickup any voice problems and I know Telecom tend to not care as long as their voice service is fine.

Still its better than dialup or woosh :)

Why not? If you are with Xtra - then I would, there is only one way to be certain rather to assume.

If you are with other provider, then contact them and log a fault.

As a small side note, where did you take your avatar? (and what does it say? I can only make out: 'Toni Marsh turns 40') Smile
