Just a question regarding rural broadband and RBI.

I have been looking on chorus's website to see about any future development in our area since UFB has been laid outside our house to run from SH1 to Bainesse school in Manawatu.

Found it interesting that if you are within 800m of an exchange you may see speeds of up to 70MB/sec on VDSL from copper cable if the exchange has been UFB going through it.

The exchange at 472 Rangiotu Road, Rangiotu, Manawatu District is about 1km west from Bainesse School and should have UFB going through it.

If one was to live close to this exchange, what connection options are possible and at what sort of cost?

Could quite easily trench directly to cabinet from location.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

  • you have reset your modem and router
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

  • Your ISP and plan
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
  • Your general location (or street)
  • If you are rural or urban
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

"Found it interesting that if you are within 800m of an exchange you may see speeds of up to 70MB/sec on VDSL ..."

This is a wildly optimistic figure (unless you live next to the exchange).  wink

I recently got 14/4 Mbps down/up with VDSL2 900m (line length) from our exchange - and this was with a VDSL master filter and new house wiring, correctly installed.

Edit:  typo

There is RBI fibre which comes from that exchange all the way to the school, by the looks of it with a fair few pairs free.

What it would cost is anyones guess, totally depends on where your situated, if crossing the road is required etc. There is only one way to find that out and thats to ask.

Both Spark and Snapdegress have Rural internet teams who deal with these sorts of requests.

I would not be surprised to see a 4~5 figure price even if your along the run of it but that is only ever a guess.

Spyware:

No evidence from Chorus maps that 472 Rangiotu Road is enabled even for adsl let alone vdsl2. Copper broadband appears to all come from Himatangi. Fibre run to school is completely irrelevant.

the address listed in the OP is actually wrong atleast according to the maps..

If you live on the route the fibre takes this could be you:
https://www.chorus.co.nz/our-network/rural-broadband/rural-fibre

if you live in the dark brown area you could get vdsl which would be anywhere from about 15 to 70 mbps down depending on your distance. if you are in the light brown area thats ADSL2 so generally 5-15mbps down.

all dpends on your address

what does the chorus address checker say for the address?
https://www.chorus.co.nz/

what are your neighbours getting? chuck their addresses in too and see what it says

Sorry to dash your hopes but even though Bainesse School has a UFB connection, the actual GPON equipment that feeds it is in the Foxton Exchange, with a Spliter in the Himitangi Exchange, out on SH1 (this spliter also feeds Glen Oroua & Oroua Downs Schools). - Only ADSL is feed from Himitangi out as far as Kellow Rd (apart from the VDSL area as indicated above). With the Bainesse Area feed from Rangiotu with ADSL.

As has also been mentioned there are spare fibres in the Fibre optic cable from Himitangi but If memory serves me right there is only one manhole/Joint and that is outside of the school with the cable being either directly mole-plowed in or in a 4 tube Microduct.  (So with no tubes for service lead delivery in it) - so any RBI fibre connection would more than likely having to be plowed back in your direction from the School.

The building you are referring to as an Exchange @ 472 is an obsolete Coax Repeater Hut and has actually been abandoned by Chorus as a section of the network - It was completely gutted by Metal Thieves a few years ago - hence the smashed in door (the black smudge on the door on Google) and is no longer in use or maintained by Chorus.

Many thanks for your reply, pretty much what I was looking to find out about the old exchange as it wasnt on any maps, just hopeful.

Looking to move near Bainesse school and the old exchange, but where I am currently would be right on the cusp of the VDSL range from the Himatangi exchange (didnt know this was available).

On the map, I am within the area on the map for VDSL but seems indeterminate with the address checker which probably means Im too far away. - only getting 750 Kb/sec on ADSL at the moment.

Will look further into it.

Cheers

Why not ask your ISP for a pre-qualification and see what happens?

I would suspect if you are currently around the Kellow Rd cnr then your copper is feed from the mini Cab HIM/K (no electronics)  - click on image for a blow up of Google for the area

Im in a house by the "H" of Hwy 56. Using the chorus broadband checker, VDSL stops at the buildings half way between the "H" of Him EXCH and the "H" of Hwy 56

We are looking to move down by the "Old Hut"

Might have to double check with ISP but Im guessing we are too far away from Him EXCH - I know our lines are coming from there as they all got cut when UFB was run underground (Thought phone lines were on other side of road)

Thanks again!

Why not look at wireless? There are plenty of options across the region that'll deliver vastly superior speeds.

Yep the feeder cable (actually the Old COAX Copper Circuits) from HIM Exchange down to the HIM/K cabinet was plowed through almost opersite you when the fibre was being laid - so your line would feed from the exchange to the cabinet and then back again on your side of the road. - If your moving down by the Old Coax Hut then your copper line would come from Rangiotu and not Himitangi, which is even further on copper than you are now. - Best look at wireless RBI options if you want 'descent' BB

I really appreciate all of the information, its all finally making sense.

Just had a chat with neighbour, His phone line was cut but apparently ours was never lost (a few years ago). I am going to assume that our phone line comes directly from Himatangi and is probably the last cable directly from exchange, where as you were saying, his was cut - the a bundled cable from Himatangi exchange to HIM/K cabinet.

I dont currently have a broadband connection at my house (using a local private wifi) - I am guessing that I may well be able to get VDSL as Im a direct connection to the Himatangi Exchange?

Got a callback booked in with spark to inquire further.

These are pretty old satellite pics, Im guessing the cut back on the map is because no one at this house has had internet services connected to it before?

We are the house right on the edge of the yellow just above the little cut back bit. The first house to be cut off during UFB rollout is the other one in photo.

When we move down by bainesse, it will likely be the only option based on the current network layout, not sure when that will be yet.

Was really hoping that the Old Exchange building was more than it was.
