We have a DSL router and two computers that both connect up to it to share the internet. This has been working fine for 2 years but I have had to format and start over on one of the computers. How do i get that computer to do whatever it has to do to get the internet working on that computer?

Providing the LAN router is configured to hand out IP Address via DHCP, and this PC has got the correct drivers and the network adapter is functioning, you just plug the ethernet cable and off you go.

(I think I may have posted this in the wrong section - sorry)

Okay, well from the computer with the working internet I can get these details:

IP: 192.168.1.8
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2
DCHP Server: 192.168.1.2
DNS Server: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

So the next step would be to find and install the drivers?

If you get those details automatically, then you are finished, and you internet should be working on that machine.

You don't need to (re)install drivers if the network adapter is working. Right-click My Computer, Properties and find the Device Manager. If the network adapter is showing up ok then you don't need anything else.

Have you tried just plugging the ethernet cable to see if it works?

To be honest, i have unplugged the ethernet cable since formatting and reinstalling windows XP. All I know is that I doesnt connect to the internet. The details that I posted before came from the computer with the working internet, not the one im trying to set up.

What OS are you using, I assume XP, but anything from 98 onward does not require drivers, or it should have request any LAN card hardware drivers it could not provide itself during install. Same goes for all Linux distos.

Assuming XP if you go START > Control Panel > Netork and Internet connections > Network Connections you should then find a Lan Connection, whats it properties. Other option is to get a command prompt up, and type "ipconfig /all" what does it say.

It won't connect to the Internet if the cable is not plugged. Could you please plug it, reboot and see if it's working?

Sorry, before I meant to say "I have NOT unplugged the ethernet cable since reformatting".

When I go into Network Connections I do not have a LAN connection. Just a 1394 connection I think.

Yes I am on XP. In the device manager I have an unknown ethernet controller. Perhaps I do need to install the Drivers? I have a DSE XH1175 ADSL router

Yes, "unknown ethernet controller" means you need to install the drivers. Find the driver CD or download from the manufacturer, run the installation program and reboot. It should then get all the configuration automatically from your router.

Just a note you need a driver for the LAN adaptor in your PC, not the DSE ADSL router, that requires no driver at all.

What lan card is it, can you actually site it, are there any product codes on the PCB of the card, or chip brand/model, if its integral to the motherboard what brand/model is the motherboard.

The ethernet is intergrated with the motherboard - no separate card. I see the word "Tyco" on it. The motherboard is Intel, the computer is Dell. Any ideas?

Visit the Dell website, go to the support area, look for downloads and use your computer model to find the appropriate drivers.
