Despite being literally 20kms from the beehive I've got third world internet access. I'm about 6.5 kms from the dslam, i get about 1mb down on a good day via adsl. In the evening when my neighbours use the internet too, it's worse - practically unusable. Even at it's best watching anything streaming isn't an option.

I can't see Chorus ever running a new cable down our road to service 5 houses - it would never make economic sense - so I'm wondering about other options.

I don't have line of site to Mt Kaukau, but I have access to a spot on a hill that does and is only a few hundred meters away.

Many years back I spoke to a chap from Kordia who said there was someone broadcasting wifi from Kaukau, but at that stage, they didn't have a consumer offering.

Anyone know if anything changed?

I'm in a valley, no 3G coverage either so cellular options aren't a go, satellite seem to be just as slow and more expensive, so no point there.

Dave

Hmm you're in a a complete deadspot (Dave has PM'd me with his address). There isn't even supposed to be ADSL coverage around here and you're served from a cabinet (that is VDSL capable - JV/AR) quite a distance away. It looks like Satellite (Wireless Nation is by-far the best) may be one of your only options but it does look like the company @sbiddle works for may have wireless coverage close to this area.

Steve - you able to check if you're able to potentially offer some sort of solution to the upper end of boomrock road?

Thanks Michael - 3G coverage is sketchie, even up on the hill and very weather dependent - cloudy days are best.

Hopefully the wireless option is viable - the pricing on the Satellite options made me wince. With a couple of teenagers in the house even at snail speeds we still go through about 150 - 200GB per month.

I would be looking at setting up a ubiquiti link to the hill a few hundred meters away providing is has power up there. Alternatively if no power up there, ethernet is supposed to work reliably upto 100m (I've had it at 120m cat5e and PoE no problem) so you could have two lengths of cat5e with a PoE switch halfway depending on distance to the top of hill and a ubiquiti dish at the end also PoE, use thicker cat5e with a smaller swg rating for less loss. Then from there you could potentially link up with anywhere you can see in the line of sight possibly vdsl customers near the cabinet, offer to pay for their connection and stick a dish on their roof to link with yours.

If you are on the Makara side of Kaukau, there is a community internet project partially funded by Meridian. It is not from Kaukau but I think enabled off some local residential properties.

I'm basically north of kaukau

Makara's pretty much west and a long way from me unfortunately

Well may I suggest you talk to folks down the road at Makara who used the Meridian community fund and see how you extend the service (and maybe use the fund as well?). That or talk to Boom Rock and see if you can access their connectivity?

yeah, but there is a "Mill creek Fund" that covers exactly where you are, so you could funding from that to replicate what they did in Makara...

It's worth looking into, but I'm skeptical there would be much support for a project like that for the 5 houses down my road, with only 3 who would probably be interested in connecting. It would be worth finding out where the Makara repeater gets it's signal from though.

@knoydart - the Lodge uses a Satellite connection, no option to share that
