Hey guys,

Just trying to find out who I should be talking to with regards to rural fibre. Currently in between a rock and a hard place internet wise - mine is the last property connected to the only cabinet in the area that's still on 1mbs ADSL where every other cabinet in the area has been upgraded to VDSL (annoyingly two of my neighbours are able to get vdsl haha). According to a Chorus tech and their broadband map/rollout map there are no plans for anything else here in the future.

However the interesting thing (as least to me) is that I've got fibre running the length of my fence line and underneath my driveway that's been there for approximately 18 months but I've since been told by Chorus that it's national redundancy loop from Tauranga to Rotorua and won't ever be available for connections. However on the other side of the road to me is a separate install of fibre that was run for the school a couple of kilometers past me roughly 7 years ago and a while back in a previous post on these forums a Chorus chap linked me to the Chorus rural fibre map showing that it's available for connection.

The problem I'm now having is that Chorus says to talk to my isp rather than them which is fine but having talked to 2Degrees which is who I'm currently with and Spark - none of the people I've talked to there have any idea at all with regards to rural fibre and can only tell me that according to my address there is no fixed broadband available at all and that I should try talking to Chorus.

Does anyone have any suggestions on who I should actually be talking to that I might be able to make some progress? Even just being able to find out the cost involved to run it 10 meters or so to the house from the fence line along with hardware or whatever the case may be install wise (I understand that it will be costly but there's not many other options other than staying with what I've got and not doing any work from home). Probably a long shot with being able to sort anything out but it can't hurt to try.

Cheers guys

Edit: Thought I'd included my location in there but obviously not. Location is *** Tauranga

I am sure you will not get connected to that run of fibre if you do be prepared to spend 10s of thousands of dollars

How far from the exchange are you? I'm all of 150 meters from the hut that has the GPON fibre stuff for a rural school, the first quote for my UFB was $12000 odd we thought that was day light robbery but in the scheme of a rural house build not that bad, we equired more and the cost ballooned to $32000 at that point we said *#*# off your got to be kidding.

Yeah, like they've said above - 5 digits is the MINIMUM you will be paying, I was just involved in one for a rural business that was around the early 30k area. With that said, if you've got money to burn, call your ISP of choice and tell them that you want to get a quote from Chorus for installing a rural connection to the fibre network.

OP the best thing to do is post all details of the location and see who picks it up.

Any number of people here with access to any number of systems that know exactly what resource is where, but if you don't provide all the relevant information then it's not likely you'll get much.

I'd edit your exact address out of your post to be honest - the road is plenty of information, and if anyone needs any more information, you can PM them it.

OK I'll get you an estimate from Chorus, may take a few business days.

Also regarding your DSL situation, you're connected to TRG/AN which is VDSL capable, however you're just three houses too far to get VDSL. Your prequal says you should be able to get ADSL of around 16Mbps.

If you're one more house down the road, you'll be on another cabinet (TRG/N) and would've been able to get 60+Mbps on VDSL.

What are your naighbours pools doing later ;p you really need to hope that the cabinet at the Merrik (hope I got it right) road interestion is the one that has the fibre feed for the school, even then I'd say 20k minimum based on my experience.

Your address is the absolute worst... Your neighbors should be able to get ~60Mbit VDSL however you're stuck on a cabinet further away providing 1-5Mbit. There is a RBI cabinet on the corner of Merrick Road that supports VDSL.

Ethernet from your Neighbours?

Seconded, if your neighbours can get decent internet maybe offer to pay their broadband bill if they'll let you run ethernet to your house or stick an antenna on theirs.

If the Chorus coverage map shows RBI fibre running past a connection will be possible, but as others have pointed out you'll be looking at 5 figures - exactly how big those numbers are won't be known until a manual prequalification is done.

Haha yeah mate, that cabinet is literally within 100m. Can't seem to get a whole lot worse than that for location and nope to the Ethernet - have already attempted persuading them of that one :)

The other thing I had wondered about is the possibility of adding another phone line or back feeding to that cabinet but I don't really know the logistics of that - or rural fibre to be honest really.

Speedtests will be anywhere from 1.0Mb to occasionally 4Mb (seemingly to do with congestion?) if that's what you're meaning?
