Is VDSL as a broadband standard in NZ dead/dying ?

Was poking around the Spark website for a clients connection info and noticed that VDSL dosent seem to come up as an option for them on the address checker, yet thats what theyre using.

I went off to the Chorus Maps site, and put in my home address, and got back that fibre is a no show until 2019 (knew that), and my only option is ADSL upto 18Mbps - yet I'm on 50/10 VDSL at home. It used to show VDSL as an option.

Whatsa going on ? :)

I hope not. No fiber in my upmarket Auckland suburb until 2019 and ADSL was horrible. I now get a good 35 down and 20 up on VDSL.

Probably to do with Sparks all out war on copper.. "UFB or 4G" seems to be all they push now.

The Chorus site is probably only showing ADSL in error; I just tried a few random addresses in Ohope (which doesn't have UFB) and it suggested VDSL for all but one of them.

Hahaha yea definitely nothing dodgy going on there... said no one ever. Would be interested to know what you get from the Chorus checker though. May just be an anomaly with the address.

VDSL is not dead, it is a stepping stone though.

I had to push my ISP to get Chorus to put VDSL on at my place.
The Map showed I could they said I couldn't due to Attenuation >15db
I said ADSL is syncing at 24mpbs (19db Attenuation) down so surely VDSL would work.
Chorus finally relented I have VDSL at 44/8MBps I'm very happy to have pushed for what I knew would work

Spark are really pushing Wireless in Twizel where I work.
Work VDSL is complete rubbish (12/1.5Mbps), wireless might be a good option

On the Spark website you have to keep clicking to move through the options to the right see VDSL (if it's available)

My VDSL in central Auckland is similarly poor (22/1). Given the variation in performance and reliability between connections, I think it should just be considered an interim solution. Just another 2 years until fibre arrives!
