Anybody know how long the battery in a VDSL cabinet is meant to last? A couple of weeks ago we had an all-day power outage - my UPS lasted several hours but the VDSL went dead after an hour. Then the day after the Auckland storm we had a half hour outage but the VDSL only lasted about 5-10 minutes. I think I'm on TBY/F.

Thanks,
Matt.

There are no SLAs on broadband so expecting battery backup is only part of the puzzle. What if the cable back to the exchange is cut. Or overhead cable is taken out. Or the cabinet gets destroyed by a falling tree.

It's all best efforts and if broadband is important having a business plan with adequate redundancy is required.

Based on the experience in Canterbury a few years ago, the active cabinets generally have quite a limited battery life, but are equipped with external power sockets for portable generators. These worked well, but there was a constant need to refuel (ie loads of contractors racing around with fuel supplies). I believe generators with larger fuel tanks have been sourced, but no idea how and when these are deployed in power cuts. In Canterbury, some farmers actually ran the generators
