So this girl knocks on the door (15:45, 10/07/18) and starts telling my mum's partner, about how "they" recently switched us from VDSL to Fibre. Unfortunately according to their "tests" and "complaints from your neighbours" the fibre connection is actually much slower than what we had on VDSL.

She said she would like to upgrade us to 200mb Fibre for no extra charge (rather, for an addition $10).

So I go and have a chat to her, I tell her that we aren't experiencing any issues, they she repeats the same stuff that she said above. When I ask her who she works for she says Chorus, I tell her Chorus doesn't sell broadband, she finally admits she works "Trust Power, but it's the same thing", then starts offering me some free stuff on her iPad (it had photos of a fridge and a TV, I didn't bother to look into this).

I tell her we're happy with Spark. I asked for her name as she was leaving, she didn't respond.

This really pissed me off. How can someone claim this kind of crap? "They" installed our connection, that they "tested" our connection, how it was "much slower than VDSL", that our neighbours were complaining, that Trust and Chorus are the same company.

This is downright predatory behaviour. Trust Power should be ashamed of themselves and tactics employed by their sales staff.

This is just a vent, but I figured I'd share this experiences with the rest of you guys.

[Not sure if this is the right forum, but I didn't see one about Trust Power. Please feel free to move it or tell me where to repost.]

Sounds like a rather shady experience for D2D sales...

sounds to me like what they have done is put your address into the chorus tool, to see what your current speeds are. then gone, "Well here is the best we can offer"

my partners border family fell for this one.

All i can say is, I'm not sure if it's the modem or the service itself but it's a pain in the rear to actually work with - It's not my connection to mess with, i just use my 4G when i'm there..

Always ask anyone who comes to your door selling or asking for stuff for some form of ID,

If all they can produce is a laminated card with a company name and photo, ask for a drivers license or passport to verify it, they usually leave about this point in the conversation....

TrustPower's sales reps are so sketchy. I had one come and see me promising all sorts of things that were not possible, it was actually very amusing. But I can see how the less tech savvy can fall for the spiel.

What they do should be illegal. And probably technically is.

It is hard to see why they wouldn't if they want you to sign-up with them. Then they get you to sign a form with their name on it. Although it may not have got that far.

I've had them before offering power and broadband... I remember the conversation went something like this:

Rep) I see you're with Flick Electric. Did you know that you'll pay more during winter? We can guarantee a rate for you.
Me) OK.
Rep) Oh, we can offer you fast broadband too. I see you have UFB - who are you with?
Me) 2degrees.
Rep) Oh, they don't offer Gigabit. We do, we can give you the best speeds possible and upgrade your router.
Me) I've got Gigabit through them.
Rep) Maybe a Gigabit router but you won't have Gigabit with them.
Rep) We can bundle your power and broadband together and you get a free gift from this too.
Me) Well, I've already got the top of the line fridge, TV and a washing machine and dryer.
Rep) Well, you don't have to take it if you don't want to.
Me) Yep sorry, here is a Speedtest from 2degrees showing I am on Gigabit. Also my power offer is cheaper than your rate at 29c/unit. You should really get your facts straight.
Rep) So, you're not interested?
Me) Not in 1000 years. Goodbye.

She was, I have no doubt. It was the Trust website she was showing me the fridge & tv on. Her iPad and lanyard both had the Trust Power logo, which I didn't recognise.

Pretty much. Who is the relevant authority that I should complain to?

Friends don’t let friends sign up with Trustpower.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Sounds like it could be a breach of the Fair Trading Act? I’m not sure whether there is any complaints agency for that, but I would start by looking at the Commerce Commission’s website for information, if you plan to follow through.

Yep, I get that, if she was actually going to sell she'd have had to cough up the name of the company .

But, I got the impression that the conversation went bad very early and maybe she could have been covering her tracks by using trustpowers name.

Terrible experience though.

Seeing as you did not fall for their "sales tactic" the commerce commission is likely to be your best bet.

Gotta love the free TV, fridge or washing machine, then the reaction you get once you find out you’re getting slung over the kitchen sink and taken for a ride on the power bill, but you got this far when you accepted the premium you’re paying for gigabit speeds so the best option you’re thinking is to pay the break fee to cut your losses until you see it’s to the tune of $1300

That’s Trustpower.. premium prices for subpar service and appliances.
